When I was 14 I was called into the Headmistresses office for a bollocking, when she left the room I spun around and dramatically v'd her back. Then turned back to see her secretary had entered from the back of the room and was starring at me, pursing her lips and scowling. That was a harsh term after that.

I imagine a lot of us have been there, just not on the TV at the time😂

BBC presenter caught giving middle finger to viewers while live on air

The long-serving BBC newsreader has apologised after being caught seemingly unaware she was live on TV as she threw up her middle finger at the start of a bulletin

She was probably jokingly doing that to a colleague? My DH and I give each other the middle finger in jest.

I recently ended a conversation with a work colleague across the pond who said something unintelligible in Yiddish about me before she hung up. It was clearly in exasperation as it started with a huge sigh and an “oy vey…” It actually made me laugh as I was being hard work in that conversation and I’m glad I heard her.

It’s kind of shit that the headline is that she gave the finger to viewers. She clearly is laughing and not annoyed.

User1775 · 07/12/2023 14:23

@Finestreason Inadvertently and imo hilariously but she did give everyone the finger. And it's an article in the mirror.....

I remember back in the days when the BBC was a respected public institution.
No wonder so many are cancelling the TV licence.
How would it have looked if she was leading into a serious piece of news like women and children being bombed to death in Gaza/Ukraine/any war zone you care to name.
Not really professional behaviour is it!!

It wasn’t though. And if she had been doing something really serious, do you think perhaps her mood and desire to make jokes might have been different?

But she was doing something serious.

She was at work, for one of the great British institutions. Supposedly.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 07/12/2023 15:22

Christ, some people are so Po-faced about this. She made a mistake whilst having a laugh with workmates.

Don’t you ever have a joke at work?
Nobody except her mates was supposed to see it. It doesn’t reflect badly on her, and doesn’t reflect on the BBC at all

But everybody watching the programme saw it, the joke was inappropriate and it does reflect badly on her and on her employer.

Sorry, and that's nothing to do with whether or nor other people make jokes at work.

Everyone saw it due to error. Regrettable? Yes.
Reflecting badly on anyone? I don’t think so.
And it’s everything to do with whether people (including BBC employees) make jokes at work, since that’s exactly what happened.

DoooooWhoop · 07/12/2023 15:49

It was extremely unprofessional to RISK that behaviour being broadcasted on live TV. She should be suspended at least.

Really? For an error which may not even be her error?
I hope your employers are more flexible and human in their treatment of you.

Elvanseshortage · 07/12/2023 16:03

This is yet another thing publicised deliberately to elicit negative comments against the BBC. The story has been twisted to seem like she was doing this to viewers. She wasn’t. And anyway, even if you think it is unprofessional (I don’t) it was HER doing it, not the BBC.

There is a concerted, blatant campaign to discredit the BBC. If you don’t believe me, start monitoring it. Who would do this? It’s really not politically motivated. Both left and right say it’s biased. Which means it’s probably doing ok in terms of balance.

We have very few things to be proud of in the UK anymore but ask anyone from anywhere else in the world what the U.K. is known for and they will tell you the BBC because is one of the most high quality and trustworthy broadcasters in the world. We must not take this for granted. It is being deliberately attacked. Don’t be stupid and get taken in by it.

Laiste · 07/12/2023 16:17

I think arsing around when you shouldn't be isn't particularly professional.

Why shouldn't she have been arsing around? Because you might get caught live on camera doing it. Like she did.

Fewer and fewer people know or care how to behave and deliver a decent service these days.
