Car Dilemma!

I have a Toyota from 2003 that is due for an MOT next week. I was told after my last MOT that they just about managed to pass it and that it's unlikely to pass again, so I'll likely need a new car. Lots has happened in the past 12 months, and despite me asking family and friends multiple times for help, nobody really helps. They'll tell you what they think you should get, but that's about it.

My dad and brother are also no help, and despite me saying I have a £10k budget, I'm being told to look at cars over my budget; however, I'm not even keen to part with £10k, having worked so hard to save up, and I'm not into having the latest, brand newest car out there. I'm happy with anything that will get me around, so really, I'll be happy to stick with mine as it's also ULEZ compliant.

What would you advise me to do if I were your daughter? Shall I just suck it up and buy a new car for £10k, or shall I go to a mechanic and get the problems fixed and take my car for a MOT in hopes it will pass again?

The thing is, your car is 20 years old now and you might get this current issue fixed and get it through the MOT only for something else to crop up. It will probably end up costing a lot of money.

I would replace it personally.

I would take it for an MOT and see what it fails on. You are more than welcome to PM me last years certificate or even the registration. I am a mechanic. I’m also happy to recommend some tips for buying a secondhand car if that’s helpful to you 🙂

I would replace it also. At that age the problems are likely to keep cropping up.

if you have the 10k saved could you get a car that’s on finance and pay say a 7k deposit and get something abit newer with a reduced monthly due to big deposit, then keep the remaining 3k for any repairs/services etc?
