Can I put wax melts inside log burner?

I no longer have my wax melt burners. I have found a few clove scented wax melts that smell gorgeous. I wondered if it would be a really bad idea to put one in the log burner tonight when I light a fire?

Where would the wax go?

BeeCucumber · 07/12/2023 10:40

Very. Very. Bad idea. Log burners are for logs.

YouveGotAFastCar · 07/12/2023 10:40

Yeah, it'd pour down the log burner if you put it on top, and it'll clog up the mechanics inside...

No no no no! It’ll end up as a shit show of a mess (experience)

Do you have a pot (or the top of a wax warmer) you could put them in into of the log burner so they melt like they usually would

flowerchild2000 · 07/12/2023 10:41

When I was a kid we would dip pine cones in scented wax and burn them in our fireplace, usually made with cinnamon. It was really nice and no harm done. It all burned up together.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 07/12/2023 10:41

Won't the smell just disappear up the flue?

Aaron95 · 07/12/2023 10:41

Very bad idea. Wax burns pretty vigourously.

The wax will catch fire, melt and you will end up with the ash tray on fire.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/12/2023 10:42

Adding paraffin (or any other oil) and the inherent volatile oils to logs is never a good idea, but especially not where they'd be in a confined space.

That sounds like a gorgeous idea. Will look for pine cones!

This is a good idea! I will do this instead. Thanks!

I think I'd only do this in an actual fireplace, and not a logburner.

Baldieheid · 07/12/2023 10:49

Not inside the log burner, no. Do you have a heatproof saucer that you can put on the top of the stove and melt the wax in that? Make sure it's heatproof though, or it'll shatter.

OrigamiOwl · 07/12/2023 10:58

Not in the actual burner no.

Have you got an old pot you can sacrifice and place that on top of the burner?

Reallybadidea · 07/12/2023 11:01

If you can smell what's burning inside your log burner then you've probably got problems with the door seal that need locking at. And if you can't smell what's inside them what's the point in trying to scent it?

Ladyofthepond · 07/12/2023 11:21

Oh gosh please do not put wax melts inside your log burner!! Put an old plate or dish on top and melt it on there.

rbe78 · 07/12/2023 11:50

I like putting a 'simmer pot' on top of my log burner. I scoffed at them when I first hear dof them, as some instagram American nonsense (and I still think it's silly to have a burner going on your cooker all day just for that) - but they're great on top of the log burner.

Heat-proof pot, water, few slices of orange, a cinnamon stick, some cloves. Smells so lovely!

Andthereyougo · 07/12/2023 12:35

No.
Put them in a metal or oven-proof bowl on top of the log burner. That way you’ll get the scent and not a black mess inside your log burner.

WaxMelt12 · 07/12/2023 14:46

Thanks everyone. Advice much appreciated 😊

Tray a charity shop and get another burner, they usually have one or two, then once you've finished with the melts you can donate it back.

EBearhug · 07/12/2023 14:49

You can make your own firelighters from pine cones dipped in wax. I wouldn’t otherwise be putting wax on the fire. They are good for getting a fire going, though.

Reggiebo · 07/12/2023 14:52

You can buy a cast iron pot for the the stove top from eBay for melts

Yes, that is also a good idea. I could treat it as a charitable donation.
