At what point do you wash jumpers?

Silly question really, but I'm just wondering how often you wash things like jumpers?

I wore a jumper over a t-shirt on Saturday. Didn't smell, and crucially, didn't spill any dinner down it!

Wore it again yesterday, again over a t-shirt. Am just tidying up and went to throw it in the laundry basket - but really, do I need to wash it? It doesn't smell, it doesn't have any spills down it, it seems daft to wash it but slovenly not to!

I wash them as infrequently as possible. If sponging and airing doesn't remove a stain or if they start to smell, they're straight in the machine, but I don't wear them against my skin, so in winter, there's no reason for them to smell.

BearSoFair · 06/12/2023 15:17

Three days wear usually

Crunchingleaf · 06/12/2023 15:19

I have a toddler and a baby so I never get past one use anymore.

I do agree with you that in general there is no need to wash them each time if you have a layer underneath. The sniff test is a tried and trusted method for determining what needs to be washed and what can be reworn. Our clothes would provably last longer and we would use less chemicals (aka laundry detergent)

This is MN so I anticipate that there will be some posters where you can only wear something once and has to be washed straight away.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 06/12/2023 15:20

I wear wool jumpers mostly and wash them as little as possible. Maybe once or twice over the winter season.

0scilla · 06/12/2023 15:21

Barely wash my cashmere ones. One of them I've never washed 😱

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 06/12/2023 15:22

This is encouraging thanks! @Crunchingleaf I was expecting most people to tell me to wash after every wear tbh!

I'm going to hang this one up for now (outside the wardrobe) and give it another once over tomorrow before I put away.

I have a mohair jumper that is over 40 years old and I think I’ve washed it three times max

ErrolTheDragon · 06/12/2023 15:25

I wouldn't put anything back in the wardrobe after it's been worn, so I have places to hang things that are 'in use'.

tescocreditcard · 06/12/2023 15:25

after 3 wears if I can get away with it

idontlikealdi · 06/12/2023 15:25

As long as no stains or smells I just keep wearing them. It's better for the jumper, the environment, and my purse.

TisTheDarnSeason · 06/12/2023 15:26

Very rarely. It's not good for them to be washed too often. I wash them when they start to get out of shape from wearing Grin

But at the risk of sounding peak-MN, I only have wool or cashmere sweaters. Acrylic needs washing more often!

Cheeesus · 06/12/2023 15:26

Try and never wash mine (the wool ones) because they shrink. Whatever I do to them.

Me too.
I have a chunky wool sweater that I've had over 30 years. It's black which probably influences things, but I only wash it once a year in the summer.
I generally wash wool as little as I can get away with.
Acrylic sweaters get washed after a couple of wears, assuming no food or grub disasters beforehand.

FestiveFrederica · 06/12/2023 15:27

Until it smells or gets something on it. Especially wool jumpers. I try not to wash them very much

I do wash my trousers pretty quickly though and (not to brag) my undies 😏

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 06/12/2023 15:35

These are wool jumpers rather than sweatshirts or any other man-made fibre, I am going to try and be more careful.

My biggest issue is that I have huge boobs and I'm a messy bugger, I'm constantly spilling stuff down my front. Miracle I haven't with this one tbh.

BurbageBrook · 06/12/2023 15:40

I used to wear them at least three times or more. Now I usually get baby sick on my shoulder so it's often just one wash!

Leafysuburb · 06/12/2023 15:42

I only buy synthetic because I'm too messy and have messy DC so they need washing after one wear and sometimes that wear can be a few hours because DC will randomly decide to smear toothpaste, paint or both over me

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/12/2023 15:42

A lot of spills can be sponged off wool ime (and others can be brushed off when they’re dry).

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 06/12/2023 15:43

I wash all my woollen jumpers in spring. This thread is making me think an annual wash is a little over enthusiastic!

WinterParakeets · 06/12/2023 15:45

I've started washing them far less often. They last longer. Currently on day 3 with a new jumper I love so much I can barely take it off at night. Spritzed with perfume just to keep it smelling fresh, but it has no dinner down it, no smell of sweat, as it isn't in contact with skin. I'm hoping to get a few more days from it too.

murasaki · 06/12/2023 15:46

If I've worn a t shirt underneath so no armpit contact , 3 or 4 wears. If no t shirt then 1 wear.

AlisonDonut · 06/12/2023 15:49

When they stand up on their own.

Verv · 06/12/2023 15:55

After 2 wears max, but usually after one.

Chouxpastryishard · 06/12/2023 16:14

When there are stains on them.

Mothmansknickers · 06/12/2023 16:17

Only when they are stained or smell. If wool, hardly ever. Clothes I wear next to my skin I wear once.
