Sick of being overweight

I've been overweight since I was about 4, I'm 25 now. Can you give me meal and snack ideas? I am a bit fussy, as in I don't like raw vegetables so the idea of a salad or a plate of carrots and hummus fills me with misery. I only enjoy a handful of vegetables but I like most fruits. I also struggle with cutting down on sugar, specifically chocolate.

Will kettlebell exercises at home be sufficient or will I need to attend the gym? How long should I work out at home?

I feel very overwhelmed, I'm 5'1, approx 180 lbs and I want to get to 140 lbs as a first goal.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you

@BarbaraBuncle Just wanted to say I love your user name. (My favourite though was Amberwell.)

I've just had a quick look online at this as I'd never heard of it before. Can you tell me your experiences with it? Thank you

I started it in August and have lost 16% of my body weight. I'm just not that hungry anymore; only want small portions, and never think about snacks. I've even lost my cravings for sweets and carbs. It doesn't get rid of the fat, it just makes it far easier to eat less.

The only side effect I've had is some mild constipation, which I take a fiber supplement for. This forum on Reddit is v good to learn more.

Oh and one more thing - have a look at Joe Wicks on YouTube for workouts and on Instagram for dietary advice etc. He has a range of books to help too.

Can I ask, what do you tend to put in salads? I've never liked salad type foods so it's tricky for me to force myself to eat certain foods (especially tomato and cucumber) I do like spinach and onions but that sounds like a sad salad. The rest of what you've listed is definitely doable for me, thank you!

I usually do:
Spinach
Coriander
Cucumber
Cherry tomatoes
Red onion
Radishes
Mini peppers
Avocado
Salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon juice

Or I'll do a meze:
Chorizo
Cheese
Green chilli pepper
Olives
Cucumber
Cherry tomatoes
Gherkins

Eat whatever you fancy but only strictly between the hours of twelve noon and eight pm. Outside of those hours it's black coffee or tea and water only. Not as hard as you think.

I've been losing weight this year with a combination of intermittent fasting (16:8) and daily workouts.

I'm post menopausal, which brings its own set of weight/metabolism issues, and I also have underactive thyroid, CFS and Fibromyalgia.

My GP suspected thyroid issues because I was always cold, exhausted, and putting weight on even though I was working out and eating healthily. It's always worth getting checked out if only to rule it out as an issue.

Intermittent fasting is so simple to do and effective. When you get into a pattern of eating within a set number of hours and then stopping for the day, you adapt to not snacking and making sure you eat enough at each meal to ensure you're not hungry. Increase your protein, and keep snacks (if you need them) to eg apples, nuts & seeds. Cut out milky coffees, cut right down on sugary stuff - sweets, biscuits (I still eat the occasional biscuit/sweet/chocolate because I like them and life's too short to stop having treats altogether).

Try cooking from scratch so you know what's in your food. Avoid Ultra Processed Foods where possible.

The bit that jumped out to me the most on this post is always being cold. I'm always freezing even when the heating is on, especially my feet. I do have low iron as well so not sure if its just similar symptoms.

I do cook most of my meals from scratch but sometimes have a quick dinner e.g takeaway, noodles etc when I'm tired. Today I'm cooking broccoli and salmon. I'm going to cut out hot chocolate and iced coffee

I've read more into it but it is quite expensive for me at the moment, thanks so much for bringing it to my attention, I'm probably going to try it in the new year

Only way to loose weight is a calorie deficit it. 3 filling meals and one snack. No sugar in drinks or drinks that contain sugar. Try to base each meal around a protein. (Omlette/toast with peanut butter and banana. Jacket potatoe with tuna mayo/chicken, rice and broccoli. Lasagne and salad/spaghetti bolegnese. Yoghurt and banana/apples and peanut butter). If you can stick to 3 moderate portions of food and a healthy snack, you'll do better than trying to live off of lettuce and binging on cake.

Eat 25-30gr of protein at every meal. I’m 20 years older than you and this year have really upped my protein intake and my body fat/ muscle composition change has been incredible. I find Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and Max Lugavere on Instagram give good, common sense, no fads eating/health advice.

Cut out all snacking.

Go for a long walk every day and strength train. Do you sleep well? People who under sleep consume more calories throughout the day. Can you not ask your mom to stop buying all that junk for a few months?

I have always had a sweet tooth. The best way to control it, is to never have it at home. Have a bit of fruit instead, I find brushing my teeth after a meal always helps.

Potentially look at intermittent fasting, to better control blood sugar levels. It’s not for everyone, but maybe could help.

I don't have much to say other than PLEASE try to get your weight in hand. I have been overweight most of life and it's horrible.
I could have done with an intervention!
Good luck OP!

Octowussy · 07/12/2023 09:20

Thank you all for your advice, for breakfast I've had a bagel and two clementines. For lunch I'll have salmon and broccoli/carrots or an omlette with broccoli and a banana

Soup is your friend op. Low fat, low calorie, nutrient dense soup. Easy tomake yourself or even heinz tomato has two of your five a day in a can. It's a good alternative for weight loss for those that don't like salad and better for winter. Just try not to have a tonne of bread with it!
And up your protein. Those protein yoghurts/puddings are great, fill you up and are excellent for those with a sweet tooth (ie me).
