Baby hernia??

Ds has just turned one. He had a teeny bump on his tummy as a newborn about an inch above his belly button that would come and go. Tonight he ate a huge portion of dinner and his wee tummy was obviously quite full so I noticed the bump above his belly button was back and sticking out. Does anyone know if this would be an umbilical hernia and if so what happens next? We're at the gp on Friday anyway so will mention when I'm in. It's not noticeable and I can't feel it normally, only when he's crying very hard or very full.

Sorry to laugh but I read your thread title and had to check it wasn't in the baby names topic!

My daughter had a large umbilical hernia as a baby. She had an op at 2yo to fix it. They operated on hers as it was large and hooked so unlikely resolve itself naturally. Also as a female who may get pregnant in the future they wanted to be sure it was resolved. The surgeon said for smaller ones they can close naturally , particularly for boys.

It sounds like it is a hernia and definitely check with the GP but in my experience they do resolve themselves. When DS was born he had a pronounced umbilical hernia (as did my nephew). In both cases they resolved themselves before they turned 3. DS’s took longer and I had him reviewed at the hospital when he was 2 but they were completely unconcerned and just said to wait longer. I was apprehensive but they were right. The only thing they told us to watch out for was if it became painful or discoloured as that could be a sign of it becoming strangulated. It never happened though and both DS and DN had really noticeable bulges even when relaxed/no pressure.

That's really reassuring thank you both! I'd read online that they can resolve themselves but wasn't sure by when!
