Sweating on the tube

I have to go to London about once a month. Its a 3 hour door to door journey. How on earth do I stop sweating profusely on the train and tube? Does everyone sweat? I feel disgusting for the entire day and can only wear black.

It's cold in the office.

No one have this?

The tubes not currently that hot but maybe taking a change of clothes might help if it’s that bad?

Clydagh · 06/12/2023 07:22

Are you wearing heavy outdoor clothes on the tube?

IheartNiles · 06/12/2023 07:24

It’s horrific. Too hot all year round and like sardines. Feel sorry for us unlucky sods who do it 5 x a week.

My tips are: avoid rush hours at all costs. Wearing layers helps, take a bag for the outdoor clothes. Bottle of ice cold water and a mini fan. Some lines are better than others, plan to transfer onto one with air con if you can in your journey.

Hello, I have this so can totally sympathise. I remember dripping with sweat on the train and nearly passing out just before the train pulled into London.

When I travel by train to London, even if it's freezing I make sure to wear light comfortable layers that are easy to remove. I'm lucky that where I work the dress code is pretty casual so this is easier to achieve.

I don't even bother with my big duvet coat in London unless I'm going to be outside for a very long period of time.

Avoid sweat inducing synthetic fabrics where possible as they'll make it even worse. Always bring a water bottle and take regular sips and get your breathing under control.

I find the tube is worse due to how crowded it can get so sometimes I get off earlier and walk the rest of the way or take a taxi.

Another thing I always make sure to do is leave plenty of time for my journey so I'm not rushing and stressed.

I'm not sure what causes it, probably something hormonal but I know a few women who are similar.

A lot of people automatically think of using the Tube when in London, but what about the bus instead? You could try taking your coat off. I was there last week and the Tube line I was on was rammed. It wasn't hot though.

FatFatMary · 06/12/2023 07:28

Take some alcohol spray, wet wipes and talc with you

User000001234 · 06/12/2023 07:28

Also totally agree with bringing spare clothing with you. I tend to pack a lightweight top and my trusty Mitchum deodorant so I can change and reapply once I'm in the office.

I run hot at the best of times but the heat on the train into London is ridiculous and that's before the Tube. I wear summer clothes, light and airy and a neck fan. It does mean I am freezing on the station at the start of my journey but it is for such a short time that I prefer this overall.

LuciferRising · 06/12/2023 08:18

I guess it is more - I burn when travelling and trains are the worst. I burn at night too. I am kind of stuck with train times as it takes 3 hours to get into the office.

I struggle with clothes because I am under 5 foot - the choices are limited, but I do not bundle myself up.

Yesterday, on the train home even my shins were damp! And not to be gross - but groin sweat is the worst.

Have ordered some super powered stuff to see if helps.

I commute by bus and you never know if it's going to be a day where the heat is blasting, or not in at all, or the windows all open, or the weak air con is on, or you're on the back bench seat that heats up from the engine. I wear everything but am prepared to undress down to a tee shirt and hold all the crap with an air of irritation if needed.

Teddleshon · 06/12/2023 08:35

Whenever I go to London I wear a light cotton dress with a coat over it which I can take off. It’s not just the transport I find unbearable but the temperature in most shops too. How I wish environmental campaign groups would focus on the unnecessarily excessive use of heating. Applies to hospitals and schools too.

Vinorosso74 · 06/12/2023 08:40

I live in London and rarely use the tube. Buses are definitely less sweaty. Where do you need to travel between in London? Some lines have air con and the walk through carriages makes it feel more airy and less cramped.

LuciferRising · 06/12/2023 08:43

Euston to Canary Wharf.

Euston to Canary Wharf.

Urgh sympathies. Jubilee is one of the hottest lines. It’s deep and relatively ‘new’ and I’m always amazed they didn’t plan it with air con.

The only other option is to see if there are alternative routes for most of the journey. Euston Square will take you to Mile End on air conditioned trains. Then you could go Stratford then Stratford to Canary Wharf.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/12/2023 09:13

I hadn't really noticed the tube being really sweaty in winter (currently freezing my tits off on a London bus though).

Euston to Canary Wharf - if you have time you could get the Overground train frlm St Pancras to City Thameslink and then walk to Bank and get the DLR. Or Circle line from Euston Sq to Farringdon and then the Elizabeth line to Canary Wharf. Both less sweaty than the deep level lines.

CatOnTheCludgy · 06/12/2023 09:21

Wear layers and strip them off as soon as you get on the tube. Just a dress is the coolest thing you can wear. Bring a long sleeve top to wear underneath it whilst at work.

Oh yes good alternative! All have temp control

Vinorosso74 · 06/12/2023 10:57

Hmm, you could get the Victoria line to Highbury and Islington (only 2 stops) then the Overground goes to Canada Water then one stop to Canary Wharf or walk. Overground is less sweaty!

Elizabeth Line has lovely air conditioned trains, I use it whenever possible now.

The latter would be all air con.

I’ve been the same since my early 20s - my temperature regulation has gone haywire, and unless it is absolutely freezing, I am too hot and sweating. 😩🥵

My routine includes:
Wearing black and navy (don’t show sweat)
Using clinical strength deodorant (some are able to be used on body parts other than armpits)
A small fan (usb rechargeable)
A hand fan
A frozen bottle of water (rest the bottle between your wrists, it makes you feel cooler almost immediately)
Ensuring I do the bum-slide to whisk away any sweat/condensation from the seat.

In the middle of winter, I have occasionally worn a coat or jeans. Otherwise, I am always in light clothes (short sleeve), natural fibres.
