Disgusting problem - dog poo bin

Sorry this is a bit gross. I have a dog poo bin in my garden basically a tub with a lid. I didn't realise the lid must have come off and it obviously got full of sleet and snow. I'm basically left with a tub of dog poo bags floating in water. How on earth do I get rid of this gross poo water? If I tip it out surely that's a health hazard and will stink. There's not a drain nearby so I would have to carry it which seems gross. Help me get rid of this poo water. Yuck!

Dig a hole, don rubber gloves then pour into hole and cover with the soil you dug out.
It’s a grim thought but won’t be a health hazard underground.

What is the point of it though? If the dog poo is in bags, what do you do when the tub is full? Does that get tipped into the main bin at some point? I’m just thinking in hot weather that is way more disgusting to carry than taking single poo bags to the main bin each time, and we have a Lab so fairly full bags!

Just pour it on the lawn. And let the soil and rain deal with it.

Pour it down the toilet.

Pour it down the toilet.

It's a complete no no putting pet waste down the human sewerage system.

QuickDraining · 06/12/2023 00:46

Having said that worms and what not could long exist in the soil too. If you have a garden consider a dedicated area you can use to compost pet waste, fence it off. Surround it with willow. Some good ideas about it online, but has to be better than throwing it in a bin.

wjpa · 06/12/2023 01:31

How much is it? I’d carry it to a drain in the road and put it down there. You could use a kids net
to fish out any bags and solid shits first and then re-bag/double bag them and put them in dog shit bin in park/wherever.

wjpa · 06/12/2023 01:31

Oh and Chuck the net out afterwards!

Chicken1978 · 06/12/2023 06:10

Sorry if the poo is in bags can’t you just put the poo bags in the outside bin and tip the water in a bush / down the outside drain? I tie my poo bags up like I assume everyone else does! If it’s loose poo floating around in a bucket of water that’s a different story altogether 🤮

Sorry. Don't do that.

This is really bad advice.

The road drains are for surface water ie rain water. Not foul water ie poo or kitchen sink waste.

WillowTit · 06/12/2023 06:58

i have same, i put the poo bags in a bucket, which fills with rain, i often have the bucket on its side to stop this issue,
otherwise just empty the lot into the landfill bin

Why aren’t we putting animal pop down the loo? It’s all poo?

cuckyplunt · 06/12/2023 07:00

We scoop our cat litter tray and flush away, why wouldn’t we?

WillowTit · 06/12/2023 07:00

just tip it into the garden, not a health hazard, they are in bags, and it is only dog poo which you have picked up from the garden. the rain will wash it away

Peacheroo · 06/12/2023 07:03

@cuckyplunt animal waste has germs in it that are not filtered through in our sewage systems. It's puts us at great risk as we will be drinking these germs.

I hope you don’t mind the pun, but this dogshit!

Peacheroo · 06/12/2023 08:39

Ok. It's shared by the water companies but @cuckyplunt knows better.

2dogsandabudgie · 06/12/2023 09:04

I would dig a hole in the garden, pour it in and then afterwards put bleach in the bin with hot water to clean it out.

longtompot · 06/12/2023 09:21

Not really the point of your thread, and I hope you manage to sort it, but I thought you were just meant to put the poo in the bin and not bag it? I take it it is one of those dog poo composter bins? My friends have one and they just put the waste on with no bag.

Surely that can't be right. If that was the case it would be very risky to drink tap water as there's no way of knowing how many people put dog poo in the sewage and there's probably many that do

CavalierApproach · 06/12/2023 09:31

@cuckyplunt The PP was broadly correct, but it’s an issue with harmful parasites rather than germs per se.

The eggs in animal waste can survive water treatment and if they go into the water system, they can be picked up by humans in drinking water and hatch internally.

Can make people ill, especially children, and apparently affect cognitive development. Water companies advise not to flush animal poo for this reason.

Peacheroo · 06/12/2023 11:33

Thank you @CavalierApproach - apologies I use germs as a cover all. Tomato/tomato etc.

There's been a lot posted on this recently. MIL has big dogs so it also blocks her toilet. 😷🤦🏼‍♀️😖

Janiie · 06/12/2023 11:44

Just pour the poo stained sleet and slush down a drain, you must have a drain outside your kitchen? Or pour over an unused part of the garden.

Then going forward I would just take the poo bags on your daily walks and dispose of in a poo bin rather than collecting in a box. Do you do this in summer too, doesn't it stink and attract flies?
