Any Lancs / East Lancs MN'ers? Looking for a "potato pie" recipe

Morning all. When I was growing up, standard grub at 21st birthdays, anniversary parties etc was a "potato pie" supper. A large vat of a potato and meat stew, a square of pasty popped on top and served with picked onions, red cabbage and beetroot.
Does anyone have a recipe for this type of Lancs potato pie? Scouse is similar I guess.
I've found one online from the Lancashire Evening Telegraph but I'd Iove to look at others for inspiration. Ta!

That sounds to be like Lancashire hot pot - I don't have a recipe, but it might give you something to search for?

Thanks but that's a recipe for a proper pie, not the stew-with-a-hat-on that I'm thinking of!

It's not hotpot, that's a different dish. Thanks though!

It is what I understood to be hotpot tbf - or at least it was what was served at any community event where "hotpot" was advertised. Along with butter pie.

Now I want a potato pie! I don't have a formal recipe but this is what I'd do...

Floured cubed beef (beef shin would be my preference) and fry, fry onion, cook in beef stock. Do this low and slow so the meat is tender. Add diced carrot and cubed potato and cook until they are soft. Only seasoning is salt and pepper which sounds like this will be bland but it's tasty.

I do what my mum did which is make a separate pastry crust for the top. I have seen some people pour all this stew in an oven dish and add a pastry lid.

User9088 · 05/12/2023 14:54

Hot pot I would say is lamb and has a potato lid made from rounds of potato

mateysmum · 05/12/2023 14:55

Yes, hotpot and meat and potato pie are different things.
My sister makes a cracking meat and potato pie and often does for gatherings/church suppers etc. I must ask her for the recipe, but from what I remember it's more or less stewing steak cut small and cooked with onions then, layered and baked with chunks of potato using just water for the stock and then it has a suet crust pastry on top. This Paul Hollywood one comes pretty close.HERE

Is it Butter Pie OP? I live in Lancs but a ‘native’ Lanc so don’t know any recipes. I do remember thinking ‘what on earth is a butter pie?’ when I first moved here…

mateysmum · 05/12/2023 14:56

Carrot has no place in a Lancashire meat and potato pie😀

Here endeth the first lesson.

User9088 · 05/12/2023 14:57

No, a butter pie is potato and onion in a proper pie (one you could pick up with a pastry bottom). Potato pie is basically beef stew with a pastry lid

Haha I like a bit of diced carrot in there. Happy to call it optional!

LucyLoopyLu · 05/12/2023 15:03

I don't have a recipe but I'm from East Lancs and know exactly what you mean.
It's not a butter pie or a hot pot.

It's a meat and potato pie filling with a pastry slice placed on top so you can serve it easily to a large group. Think for a wedding reception/ wake / birthday party in a catered venue.

I would say it needs to have stewing steak, carrot, onion, celery, flour, salt and pepper, stock. Maybe a small amount of thyme or mixed herbs? I wouldn't put any wine in the sauce (like I normally would for a stew) but you could potentially put some ale in.

Red cabbage, pickled onions and beetroot absolutely essential for serving

MissJam · 05/12/2023 15:06

Ahhh sorry I didn’t see the ‘meat’ bit in the original post 🙈 it could be meat and potato pie

This also reminds me of a time I went to a chippy here with my friends and asked what meat was in the meat and potato pie. The response was ‘meat’

forrestgreen · 05/12/2023 15:15

It'd be called meat and potato pie here. Officially potato and meat pie if you buy it because there's very little meat in it!

witchypaws · 05/12/2023 15:17

Yeah hotpot is potato

I would basically make a beef stew with potatoes and shove some pastry on top Grin
And then make a butter pie as a side GrinBlush

Gymnopedie · 05/12/2023 15:19

I'm not originally from Lancs and I don't have a specific recipe but I've been to several charity events where it's been served as the supper.

I'm interested in food so I've kind of analysed what's in it. My impression is that it's a meat and potato pie but with very little meat, which makes sense if you're serving it at a fundraiser and want to keep the costs down to maximise profit. So some meat, a lot of potatoes, gravy (given the lack of meat, made with Oxo/granules) and maybe onions. Nothing more fancy, again for cost reasons. But with the potatoes (again I'm guessing) either cooked in the meat and gravy or at least added in good time to soak up the gravy flavour so that they taste 'meaty' and you don't notice that there's very little of the real stuff.

And yes, butter pie had me scratching my head too.

1ittlegreen · 05/12/2023 15:19

It's stew with mash on top x

witchypaws · 05/12/2023 15:20

This looks closest to me

The middle of the Booths pie comes close to what I picture in my mind from similair events

OP I know exactly what you mean and what you need is a potato heavy pie 'middle' sometimes corned beef hash with a lid is the closest to what you need! Google some corned beef hash recipes as one may look like what you are picturing!

It is not a stew or traditional hot pot but you will find some people call it a hot pot... but what they mean is a thick, potato-y pie middle!

ColinRobinsonsFart · 05/12/2023 15:28

Mancunian here - 'tater pie' was what m gran made us - and yes served with pickled red cabbage, pickled onions and either brown or red sauce.

I don't have a recipe as it is just in my head

But I would like some now!

Bringmetea1234 · 05/12/2023 18:23

Sorry also missed the meat bit. I know the type of pie you mean, like a corned beef hash type pie but with beef or lamb.

Mumaway · 05/12/2023 18:27

That sounds like a hotpot. Tattie pie is a bit like a cream-less gratin (essentially onions, sliced potatoes, stock, cheese sprinkle, cook in oven)
