Smoke alarm help

Strawberryjams · 04/12/2023 20:38

Our smoke alarm started chirping every 30 seconds last night around 2am. It is mains powered and battery backup. We have just replaced the 9v battery (used Duracell, if relevant) and it’s now chirping every 60 seconds. The beep appears to be coming from the ceiling part as opposed to the alarm is that even possible? I have tried turning the smoke alarms of at the mains, removing the battery and pressing the test button to drain. Once all set back up the beeping continues every min. Is there something I am missing? We are the 2nd owners of this new build property so I assume came with the house so would be around 7 years old.
Wondering if missing something simple or if buying a like for like which screw fix have will fix the issue or is it a wiring problem?!
Thanks

Try giving it good going over with the hoover nozzle. Sometimes some dust inside can cause it to do that.

And if all else fails, where we live the fire service will come and fit new smoke alarms free of charge so worth giving them a call on their non-emergency number if you need new ones. I had mine fitted by them years ago but they recently came knocking everyone’s doors offering to check and replace smoke alarms for free.

Oh a hoover 🤣 do I just hoover the actual alarm that I can take down? Total nightmare it’s driving me mad already. I’m happy to buy a replacement but don’t want to waste money if it won’t solve the problem! Thank you

Funnily enough I have the exact same issue atm!

Having done all you did, I rang my trusty handyman who said the whole alarm needs to be replaced when this happens.

Apparently not tricky to do, I just bought a new one, but mine is actually our heat sensor in the kitchen & is in the vaulted roof / extension part so hard for me to reach, even on a ladder. (Single parent so no man available!). I'm hoping I can do it myself & not have to call trusty handyman out.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/12/2023 20:46

We've had the beep for quite a while - it took me a while to track down the right sensor.

It's really annoying at times & then other days we don't notice it!

Strawberryjams · 04/12/2023 20:49

Omg I am mortified and an idiot. Yes the alarm was last night because even when we took the battery out it still beeped and we buried it in the washing basket 🤣 was giving me friends vibes like Phoebe 🤣
Just went up to check it and I’ve realised the new beep is from the co2 detector and on the side says replace by April 2023! Nothing to remove or replace batteries so don’t know how to stop it beeping!!

Take it down, take the battery out, hold the test button down for 15 seconds then put it back together.

Nope that won't work if it's due to be replaced.

You need to replace it.

For CO2 alarms where I am, the registered gas installer that comes to do your boiler service will replace it.

It can work for a smoke detector (and I didn't see the bit about a carbon monoxide detector because it was posted at the same time as my reply was)

Strawberryjams · 04/12/2023 20:56

Thanks everyone, felt like an idiot standing up on a stool arguing with my DH that the ceiling couldn’t possibly be beeping 🤣 Glad I now know what it is and easily sorted!

Some alarms have integral batteries so you cannot replace it and need a new unit,

SgtBilko · 04/12/2023 21:38

Just buy a new one. They cost about £15.

Baftler · 04/12/2023 21:44

We just buy a new Co2 monitor once it goes out of date. I usually sharpie the expiry date on the top so I can see it easily.

In the future if your mains smoke alarm does play up and replacing the battery doesn't stop it beeping then replacing it with a like for like means all the wiring is the same and easy to do yourself.

CyberCritical · 04/12/2023 21:55

Glad you've found the problem OP.

For anyone else having the beeping from fitted smoke alarms, the head units expire after a while, so replacing the 9v battery and cleaning the dust doesn't work. You can buy new head units for about £15 usually, they just slide off and on (sometimes need a bit of encouragement with a screwdriver and some swearing).

EarringsandLipstick · 04/12/2023 22:08

It can work for a smoke detector

Yes it can.

But not in the circumstances OP
describes, and not when the alarm is due to be replaced. (As I had to find out myself!)

Strawberryjams · 04/12/2023 22:08

Thanks everyone, I’ve got a new one ordered and coming tomo. Was £23 as in Scotland so has to be tamper proof. I’m just glad the beeping has stopped! I have really good hearing and it woke me up last night my DH couldn’t even hear it at all. I really struggle with noise, the drone of my neighbours charging their EV drives me mad!

Glad to hear this!

I'm enduring the beeping atm, as I have a ridiculous aversion to doing this! I have the replacement unit, it's just a little tricky as is very high on the roof.

Right, am doing it tomorrow!

CyberCritical · 04/12/2023 22:40

@EarringsandLipstick if I remember correctly the instructions give the impression you just lightly push the unit to the side and it will delicately slide off with nary a hint of effort.

If you look on YouTube you'll find loads of people agree that you need to shove a flathead screwdriver into the little slot and give it a hearty shove.
