Beginners crochet kit

Peabody25 · 04/12/2023 16:21

I've been asked to buy a beginners crochet kit with granny squares for an 11 year old girl for Christmas!

Budget is up to £17 and needs to be able to be posted. Any ideas please? I've no idea about any of this kind of stuff.

Thanks all

I crochet - to be honest, the kits you can find are often very poor value. Might be better to get her a set like this from Amazon: OWill 61PCS Crochet Hooks Set, Crochet Kits for Beginners Adults,Crochet Hook with Storage Bag and Accessories,Ergonomic Crochet Hooks for Arthritic Hands amzn.eu/d/8wbAkTt

She can then watch videos to see how it's done (or work from a book if there's space in the budget)

Ooh that's brilliant thank you! Is there any
Books you'd recommend in particular?

Good videos on Attic24 and Bella Coco.

It's not really my area of crochet but this book is only £5 and has some good reviews

I’d buy her a nice selection of DK ( double knitting ) stylecraft which comes in nearly a hundred colours and a 4mm hook
Maybe a sewing up needle
Loads of tutorials online which she will find easier to learn from than a book

Have you looked on Etsy? There are various beginners kits on there.

I second the link to Bella Coco, I learned to crochet in lockdown with her, and this channel on you tube was brilliant. As a pp said often the kits aren't great value but they have all the stuff you need in them so saves messing around. Hobbycraft is good to look around and they have staff who advise you. Good luck

If you’ve got a local branch of The Works I’d have a look in there too, I’ve picked up a few how to crochet books from my one.

Yep, stylecraft Special DK yarn is fantastic stuff, easy to use, lovely colours and washes well. Don't buy any novelty yarns like the fluffy eyelash, super chunky or chenille. They are great for the right purpose but will be difficult to learn with.

A 4mm crochet hook, I like the knitpro wave but everyone has their own preference.

The Works usually have books of Granny Square patterns, only thing I would say is try to look for a U.K. publisher, there are differences in crochet terminology between U.K. and US, so DC 'double crochet' stitch is different dependent on which country the pattern came from.

Also something like one of these tote bags for her to keep her projects in https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1144797532/personalized-crochet-bag-with-name?gaorder=mosttrelevant&gasearchhtype=all&gaviewwtype=gallery&gasearchhquery=crochet+tote&ref=srgallery-1-13&pro=1&edd=1&sts=1&locallsignalsearch=1&referrerrpageguid=f7a1e7df4ce.52d13fb946fc4a63d6aa.00&organiccsearchclick=1
