Fuel price different at till from advertised price.

I needed fuel this week whilst out and used a Texaco garage which advertised a reasonable price. I usually fill up at Sainsburys.

I noticed the price on the pump whilst filling which was a different price to the advertised one but thought that it's an old pump and not digital so a legacy price maybe. However I only put in 10 litres instead of filling up.

I paid at the till and actually got a receipt which confirmed the price charged as being the same as the one on the pump which is nearly 20p a litre dearer than advertised.

I tweeted Texaco and trading standards who won't respond (I uploaded the photographic evidence both times).

What else can I do because I don't think this is legal?

Photo shows both prices and I kept the receipt.

Did you put in the premium fuel?

LakeTiticaca · 04/12/2023 14:09

It isn't legal. Go back with your receipt, show the picture and ask for a refund.
Trading standards should be paying them a visit . You won't be the only person they have diddled

SisterMichaelsHabit · 04/12/2023 14:12

Photo doesn't show both prices? On the pump, the top left is the cost of your fuel. The top right is how much fuel you got. The bottom number is the price per litre which seems to match the fuzzy cost of diesel on the big Texaco sign. What did they actually charge you?

You need a clearer photo.

Pump charged 162.9 by the looks of things. Petrol? Premium? Diesel?
What does the light up sign read? Looks like 143.9 for E10. Can't read diesel.

Underthesea65 · 04/12/2023 20:04

Can you upload a picture of your receipt?

muchalover · 04/12/2023 20:06

Sorry. I think uploading it has made it fuzzy. It's a very clear photo. The price advertised is £1.43 a litre. Diesel is £1.55. The pump says £1.62 as does my receipt. There was only unleaded or diesel no premium options. Just two nozzles.

I will try and see how to contact trading stands directly rather than via Twitter.

Thanks all.

What did the person behind the counter say when you brought it up with them at the time?

Pipistrellus · 04/12/2023 20:14

The pump says e5 which is a premium option now. Perhaps the e10 was on another pump.

Underthesea65 · 04/12/2023 22:45

That price that is showing on the large sign is for E10. The nozzle shows E5, so the price you were charged was probably right

Hi, there was only standard unleaded and diesel pumps. No other options. Just two pipes. So whilst it might be the right price for premium (unlikely at 20p a litre more) they don't sell premium and the advertised price is for standard meaning they are advertising a product they don't sell (standard unleaded) or setting the pump for a product they don't sell (premium).

I've reported it to trading standards by phone now. It's up to them.

Often they will have different flavours of fuel at different pumps. My local filling station sells 4 types of fuel but each pump only has two nozzles. I find it hard to believe that they’ll still have an E10 pump labelled up as E5. As a PP said, it looks likely that you picked the pump with super unleaded.

Are you sure that the pump wasn’t dispensing the E5 petrol (is it’s labelled in your picture) and another pump had the E10 petrol? I was at a small, unfamiliar petrol station recently has had to look at a few pumps before I found the E10 one as they each pump only sold two of the fuels available.

Underthesea65 · 09/12/2023 01:10

They do sell premium though as the nozzle says E5 beside it and yes it can be up to 20p more depending on each individual filling station and where you are in the country
