CBT for PTSD?

Hi, I’m struggling with an incident where a close family member with severe LD attacked me.

I still see this person, and check in with them by FaceTime daily (they were moved to a unit for people with challenging behaviour after the attack).

I really struggle because this person is so negative. They have also attacked staff and other residents; used ligatures on themselves; cut themselves with glass and damaged property, both theirs and other people’s.

I have to see them- I am their appointee. I also love them, but I don’t like their behaviour at all, and it has become much worse since going into the care facility.

I know I haven’t dealt with what happened, and that is also affecting both my relationship with this person, and also my life outside that relationship.

I'd love to hear from people who have successfully gone through therapy for PTSD, and have managed not to be triggered afterwards.

I’m thinking CBT, but am more than open to suggestions.

Thanks for reading.

I should add, the incident was five years ago, but they have attacked other people since.

I have had real success with CBT for PTSD, delivered on the NHS. It got rid of my flashbacks and other symptoms. While I still think about the event I no longer react in the same way, and when I feel the trauma feelings coming on I manage to deal with them constructively, if that makes sense?

It does @BrownTableMat . I will ask my GP. Thank you.

Did you have to revisit the cause of your PTSD as part of your daily life?

My instinct is to run away from this person, but I can’t.

It’s worth looking at EMDR or brainspotting to de-sensitise your trauma. Talking therapies do help but work well in conjunction with other type of therapies.

I just googled EMDR, I don’t think it’s without its issues.

I agree that talking wouldn’t be enough for me though.

Thank you.
