Shit - smashed work monitor, would you claim on house insurance

Literally had it for 2 days 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ (WFH monitor)

Hadnt set it up properly , caught my foot in a lead and pulled the whole thing down. Screen is trashed

I have accidental damage cover, but since I didn’t pay for the monitor could I claim?

Isn't it covered by work?

TheFlis · 04/12/2023 12:07

Monitors are usually pretty cheap, unless it was a Mac one it would no doubt be less than your excess to replace it.

ditalini · 04/12/2023 12:08

It'll be covered by work, and no you can't claim on your home insurance.

purplecorkheart · 04/12/2023 12:08

I would probably just replace myself unless it is a mac. Most monitors are not expensive.

LubaLuca · 04/12/2023 12:10

Definitely let work send you a new one. They might be a little pissed off, but they supply equipment and these things happen.

Morespecicially · 04/12/2023 12:11

Any replacement would come out of budget and I know for sure our “tech” budget is already over spent.

Would rather just replace myself than have that conversation with the uppers.

I recently had to explain why no a new member of staff couldn’t just use a broken keyboard and “avoid” the 2 broken keys . No I’m not joking

Not sure if you could claim it as you didn't buy it, might depend on your policy?

I'd ask work for a new one (unless it's a new job / cheap monitor and you want to just replace it yourself!) but also make it clear you'll follow the DSE rules on safe working!

5thCommandment · 04/12/2023 12:21

Tell work IT and be honest. If they cover it they will just give you another. Don't do a fake claim on one insurance. If something bad happens to your home they check everything - dont risk voiding your insurance with fraud 🤦🏼‍♂️

charabang · 04/12/2023 12:22

No, you need to let your employer know. They're covered for this sort of thing and should provide you with another monitor.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/12/2023 12:29

You need to tell them the truth. Offer to cover the replacement cost if you feel that strongly.

HerRoyalNotness · 04/12/2023 12:31

Surely they’d have some spares. It should have an asset sticker on it too which matches the brand/model of monitor. Let work deal with it

MrsElsa · 04/12/2023 12:33

Not expensive, couple hundred quid at most. Let work deal with it.

Ponderingwindow · 04/12/2023 12:34

Odds are that it isn’t a very expensive monitor. Even if our home insurance covered it by policy, it isn’t going to actually trigger real coverage.

I understand not wanting to have the conversation with work, but won’t they notice if you swap the monitors? All our equipment is tagged.

NotTheBeesNotTheBees · 04/12/2023 12:38

All our equipment is tagged.
This! Surely they have a list of which serial numbers have been allocated to which person. You need to speak to them, offer to replace it or to buy your own monitor to use at home.

ClivetheDestroyer · 04/12/2023 12:46

I once spilled an entire cup of tea all over an expensive work macbook... I felt awful but they were completely unfussed and just ordered me a new one 😮
Turned out they did actually have a policy about remote equipment, so yours might too??
I would start by googling the model of the monitor though - there's a chance it might not be expensive. If it's not then it might not be worth using your insurance.
Agree that it will probably be tagged though, so you probably can't just replace it and say nothing.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/12/2023 13:38

I've just googled my WFH monitor - it's about £100 on eBuyer.

I wouldn't claim on my house insurance for that as it's probably less than the excess. So unless yours is really fancy, which I doubt going by your keyboard story, the best thing to do if you don't want to admit the accident is to buy a new one.

But using it while not set up properly contravenes the Display Screen Equipment regulations. Haven't they told you to do an assessment on the new screen? If not, it's partly their fault anyway, so something to bear in mind even if you don't want to take it up with them.

Bogeyes · 04/12/2023 13:42

Can you buy a used one?

witchypaws · 04/12/2023 13:48

I would tell them
My work screen is £450 ish Blush
