Slug in the house… now I’m really worried!

Someone tell me I’m being ridiculous (please)

I had a slug in my house and trapped it under a pint glass to let it outside. It wouldn’t go when I was shaking the glass so I left the glass outside for a bit until it had crawled away. Its crawled all over the inside of the glass

I just had a drink from the very same pint glass. DH thinks it was washed up with washing up liquid but isn’t sure.

Chances of rat lungworm? I know snails and slugs can harbour all sorts of nasties 😩

You’ll be fine , why wouldn’t a glass be washed properly anyway ?
Anyway , pour some salt along the edge of any entry point . Doors . Windows etc
( we have an old draughty house , with slugs getting in and leaving their slimy tracks , ) the pest controller told me this tip

Hopefully there won’t be a next time , but pour some salt on the slimy git and that will make it much easier to get rid of

Arrgghh, don't pour salt on them, poor little sods melt into a blob and are very difficult to shift.

Pick them up and put them next door.

They tend to come indoors when it is wet, so if you have a damp space behind a cupboard or something you need to find out. Block bottoms of doors to outside.

dementedpixie · 03/12/2023 21:51

We also use the 'pick them up with kitchen roll and fling them over the back fence manoeuvre" for slugs in the house. As long as the glass is washed you'll be fine

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 03/12/2023 21:58

You will be absolutely and totally fine

Thatswhy11 · 03/12/2023 22:00

@RealBigBarbie exactly. OP can't be serious so she catches slugs in glasses and doesn't think to wash it herself? Expects DH to do it? I wouldn't of used a glass at all.

PonyPatter44 · 03/12/2023 22:38

I would rather have mice than slugs. If I had caught a slug in a glass, that glass would be going in the bin, and the bin would be going in the shed! Just reading the OP has made my legs go all funny - I do have a bit of a problem with slugs.

I used to think mice were cute and delightful until my house got overrun and I'm basically traumatised from it (all killed now and house well proofed). Even my 3yo randomly jumps at shadows sometimes and says she might have seen a mouse.

So yeah, I'd rather have the slugs. At least they're slow and silent.

But yeah luckily you don't have to have either, you can proof against both at once! I sleep easy now, we are proofed against mice, rats, slugs, beetles, pretty much everything. Any pests would have to come in by hitchhiking in our pockets

OP I recommend the tactic of an aunt of my friend, apparently she used to cut them in half with scissors
no messing
messy, though

Baublewarble · 03/12/2023 23:27

Have you read the book Slugs…..

Eeeeeurgh what a mental image

I feel like mumsnet needs the opposite of the "Thanks" button, the "No, Thanks" button

caringcarer · 03/12/2023 23:55

I pick up with a couple of pieces of kitchen roll and throw it in the bin.

Siha345 · 04/12/2023 00:57

The likelihood of any nasty parasite or really anything being excreted in a bit of dried and potentially washed slug slime is not worth worrying about. As PP said lots of people garden without gloves and they’re fine. Many of us also eat garden fruit and veg without washing it because we’re gross because we’ll be fine

InefficientProcess · 03/12/2023 20:49

Why did you catch a slug in a glass? They aren’t exactly fast moving.

I just grab some kitchen towel and pick the fuckers up to throw them out the door.

This.
They don’t bite!
Im sure you’ll be fine, chances are very low but if you were going to keep the glass why didn’t you wash it thoroughly or soak it in diluted bleach?

Whu · 04/12/2023 07:00

Pouring salt and cutting them in half?! Some people are absolute psychopaths. Just because they are small creatures doesn’t mean you should torture them!

megletthesecond · 04/12/2023 07:07

I'm glad I rinse the outside of my milk bottles in the morning. There's always a slug sitting on them.

MadeOfAllWork · 04/12/2023 07:10

With all this carry on about washing things in bleach and throwing the glass in the bin I do wonder how all these precious people manage to cope with having sex or giving birth.

InefficientProcess · 04/12/2023 07:22

daisidoo · 03/12/2023 20:52

Not sure, I guess because that’s what I’d do with a spider. I should never have done it! Just worried we’ll be infected even though logically I know it’s a stupid worry to even have

But spiders are fast. It’s hard to pick one up. A slug will be in much the same place when you walk past again 5 minutes later. They’re bigger too.

Do you always get so anxious about stuff like this?

Ooh get a milkman box, it will spark joy. Just a clear plastic box with a lid.

We get not just milk but apples and bread from our milkman, it used to get bothered by foxes but now we have the box it's great!

Yes we have a history of pest problems lol
