Self care activities

I hate the term 'self care' but it does describe it I suppose. I've realised I do pretty much nothing to look after myself. I'm fat, unhealthy and ugly. What little things can I do to improve self care?

In what way are you unhealthy? I’d tackle that first. Is it something you need a GP’s help with?

I've been to GP and they were useless. They just told me to lose weight. No shit shirlock. I'm about 6 stone overweight, eat all the wrong things, don't drink enough water, I walk a lot but not any other exercise really. I work from home and only shower about 3-4 times a week. My teeth are poor due to all the sweet food. I know what to do, it's just doing it. Mental block. My mental health is poor but I don't want to go back onto anti d's

Im sorry you feel so bad. I would start with small changes, don't put any pressure on yourself.

Maybe start off with committing to a shower everyday and make a plan to get your teeth checked. Do you have a dentist. Dont worry as they would have seen it all before.

Don't try and change everything all in one go, it will be too overwhelming. Baby steps. 💐

I do have a dentist and do go every 6-12 months but I know I could do more as I have a lot of fillings.

Why not search out some
podcasts to make you think better about yourself, then start being nice to yourself- long bath, nice soaps etc, face pack- early night - sleep podcast so you start to like yourself before trying any steps to diet or exercise improvement? Also write some goals down about what you want to do (not diet or specifically but about happy things away from some of the things you need to change). Until you decide you like yourself and think what nice things you’d like to do in the future you may find motivation a bit tricky.

Agree with PP, trying to do too much could lead to a feeling of failure.

you could think about things you want to change and how easy it will be for you to make those changes. For example, if you decide to get healthier but joining a weightloss club and buying different foods is out of your budget, maybe you can start by drinking more water, cutting down on sugar and walking X amount if steps a day. Don’t set an arbitrary figure, if you normally walk 2k steps then double it this week and build up.

if you can face going for walks to get your steps in then maybe download some inspiring podcasts (get cheap ear buds from Amazon) or even if you like reading but don’t get time download some free books from Audible. Sometimes just doing things you like but don’t prioritise for yourself can make you feel so much better. You’ve got to learn to love yourself or you won’t commit.

best of luck

Can you refer yourself to a Talking Therapies service? That might be able to help with the mental block.

Firstly make sure you drink enough every day. Being even slightly dehydrated makes me feel utterly shite - headachey and really lethargic.

Secondly make sure you're getting all the vits and mins you need. I take D, B complex and iron. The iron is particularly important for me as I can be anaemic. It makes a real difference to my mood and energy levels when I'm lacking iron.

Thirdly, try not to buy shit and try to buy veg and fruit. If its in the house I'll eat it so I trick myself by not getting in chocolate and other sweet things.

Fourthly, try very hard to do a bit of cardiovascular at least a couple of times a week. It really honestly does make you feel better (though it feels like hell on earth when you're doing it). It's also something you can start really small (5 squats, 5 star jumps, 5 push ups) and build gradually.

And believe me, you're not ugly, so stop thinking that immediately.

Thank you all.
