Where in the world should we move to? Leaving London

Currently live in central London. In a lovely area. It’s fun but the weather is getting us down and it’s vastly overpriced. No children yet. Where can we move for a few years?

Sydney? Amsterdam? Bermuda?

Dh is a lawyer and I work in finance so we can go to lots of places. Will just depend on role and pay.

I once knew somebody who worked in Bermuda for a couple of years and had a great time. That was a secondment via his existing employer though.

I think if you choose a non-English speaking country, somewhere where you can speak some of the local language.

I would also suggest you consider how women are treated, which rules out places such as Dubai, for example.

pinkwinkwink · 03/12/2023 11:16

Yes, good point. Dubai would not be our cup of tea at all. We are very low key, not into flashy wealth.

Australia or NZ.

Easy.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/12/2023 11:22

Canada

HoHoHoliday · 03/12/2023 11:23

Can people do this? Just decide to move somewhere in the world and go there?! I honestly had no idea. What about visas, working permits, etc?

Giraffescarf · 03/12/2023 11:27

Soooh how exciting! Keep us updated! I wish I knew anywhere else in the world well enough to reccommend but sadly I will have to watch and enjoy your thread instead.

Tangelo · 03/12/2023 11:28

Not Amsterdam if the issue is the weather! It’s basically the same as London

Aus, South Africa, California if you can get secondments through your existing roles? That would be the most straight forward way to do it in terms of language, visas, salaries etc. Gives you a nice clear way back too, which is worth thinking about

Cyprus. Depending on your jobs. In DH's field, we've seen a few jobs in Cyprus come up.

If you just want money and somewhere different, Malaysia is a good shout or Singapore (but the work ethic in Singapore is a bit OTT). Great transport links to explore SE Asia as well as decent money for most jobs for westerners. But Malaysia is H-O-T all year round (Christmas there was surreal)!

Canada is an easy choice to settle in, and if you're under 30 (or 35 with Irish citizenship) you can get the working holiday visa which makes it really easy to get set up. It doesn't have the same kind of immi caps and rules as Aus/NZ so you won't get to the end of your visa and find yourself having to leave necessarily.

GrandHighPoohbah · 03/12/2023 11:32

If your DH is a lawyer, wouldn't he have to retrain in the law of your destination country? But if not, then I would choose Sydney or California.

TiredCatLady · 03/12/2023 11:34

A caution that your DH law qualifications may not be applicable elsewhere in the world/additional courses or certifications may be necessary for them to practice so that’s worth considering.

Would you be intending to keep your existing jobs and work remotely? That will also affect where would suit best.

If someone is either highly educated with many years experience or vocationally qualified snd experienced or is in a sought after area of work (builders, health care, teachers) then yes it's pretty easy for Aus and Nz.

Think it's similar for US and Can

EasternStandard · 03/12/2023 11:37

I’m not sure how the work visa thing applies for Aus?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/12/2023 11:59

I don't know what the job situation is like there, but if it's just weather in the UK that bothers you what about Gibraltar? No visa requirements for British citizens.

YogaLite · 03/12/2023 12:02

Gibraltar or Jersey/Guernsey?

thorneyislanddoris · 03/12/2023 12:50

Fiji. My friend is a lawyer and has a great job there. She loves it.
