Best Car Ice Scraper?

The scrapper I have is pretty useless! And I’m short so struggle to reach the middle of the of the windscreen.
Any suggestions please?

I haven't scraped by car windows for years

Like warm water and I'm away in minutes whilst you're still on your first window lol

People putting water on their cars is how I ended up spending Christmas in a cast and a sling last year!

I'm currently using a metal wallpaper scraper because my plastic one has gone missing - it's brilliant so far! Because it's a bit flexible and has a sharper edge the ice glides off!

If you're at home, warm water tied in a sandwich bag and wiped over the windscreen works well, and solves the problem mentioned by @QuestionableMouse above.

Swedish ice scraper is the best I found, I tried the plastic scraper in a mit ineffective also the warm water in a plastic bag less than useful as the water got cold quick and then it didn't work.

My kid fell and landed on her back last week, because of a patch of ice on the pavement- most likely due to someone using water to defrost their windows

Yellowdots; hasn't happened yet but I could use my plastic parking disc, it has a scraper on the side.

CommaChameleon7 · 03/12/2023 22:23

I second a Swedish ice scraper. Have had mine for years. Really solid and doesn't snap like the cheapo ones from garages or similar.

BeyondMeasure · 03/12/2023 23:12

Careful with the window cover: I bought one online and it left a terrible grey film on the window for months.

I'm scared to use scrapers after experiencing the dreaded grit a long time ago when I was a student. Maybe it was just really bad luck that don't ever be repeated but I don't dare chance it!

Old Plastic card such as Waitrose card, Morrisons more card, old Asda gift card.

Work a treat

I just put some warm, - not hot- water in a carrier bag and use that to 'wipe' the windows. Clears ice off in seconds. Best, quickest and cheapest way I've found.

Zingy123 · 04/12/2023 07:27

@CatOnTheLap You have to angle it. Probably about 45degrees. I can do the whole car in seconds.

rileynexttime · 04/12/2023 08:58

@Eellen that sounds interesting. But I can't quite understand the mechanics.
Doesn't the water dribble out and down your sleeve as you're wiping?

RampantIvy · 04/12/2023 09:25

We have had some really hard frosts over the last week. I tried the warm water in a bag trick. It didn't work. I have a windscreen cover, but I still needed to scrape the side windows.

I shall pursue some of the other suggestions on here though.

Fraaahnces · 04/12/2023 10:32

You can spray diluted vinegar on the ice or isopropyl alcohol. You can probably even buy the blue squirty stuff that is diluted antifreeze.

Thank you, I’ll dig it out of the boot (at least i think it’s in the boot) and will try again next time we have a frost.

RampantIvy · 04/12/2023 21:55

I have just ordered one as my current one has struggled this week.

LardoBurrows · 04/12/2023 22:26

My Dear old Dad was the best car scraper I ever had. Long ago when I was young and still living at home he would start my car on cold icey mornings and scrape the ice off all the windows, whilst I was still eating my breakfast. When I came out the car would be warmed up and completely free of ice. No one else has ever done that for me 🙁.

Nowadays I turn the car on, put the windscreen heater on full blast and use a bog standard plastic ice scraper that I bought from Halfords and de-icer for the bits I can't reach with my scraper. If I'm feeling lazy I just switch the engine on lock the car with my second set of keys and go back indoors for another mug of tea.
