Cough, cough, cough, what should I do ?

Feeling ill since Tuesday, but felt it coming on days before that. Needing paracetamol and ibuprofen, with lozengers for the throat and cough medicine. Coughing up green stuff. Went to the GP Friday, said it’s viral so carry on.
im up now because this is the fourth night where I’ve done nothing but cough and piss myself over and over. Every time I get into bed it’s cough, cough, cough. I’ve tried taking an antihistamine to get some sleep, but I’m lucky if I’m getting 4 hours in total. I can’t see how I can go to work on so little sleep, and piddling when I cough. I’ve had enough so I’ve got back out of bed for a pity party. The night is so long when you’re not sleeping.
i just don’t know what to do to make it better.

Have you tried broncho stop?
Or a mix of hot lemon and honey.

No, I’m on Covonia. Is the Broncho stop better? I don’t seem to be coughing much up now, it’s just this irritating cough as soon as I lie down.
What is the honey/lemon recipe?

@Lanaa is right, I discovered the same by chance with my DS (and myself), no idea how/why it works but it does!

I will be doing the Vicks thing tonight

I managed to get some disturbed sleep by sleeping semi upright. Definitely helped! Currently experimenting with olbas oil on soles of feet and chest, I think it’s helping…

I have this too, have also only had cough about a week and felt weird for a week before that. I also hear you on the weeing and lack of sleep, it is awful. I just want to stay in bed and feel sorry for myself but I have been at work and then just going to bed really early every day exhausted to not really sleep deeply. It is slightly concerning to hear this can last for weeks, I am fed up with it already.

locketrocket · 03/12/2023 13:33

Checking in, I've had this stupid thing since September 😩

Things that have helped me:

Keeping warm but not over heating
Using buff/scarf/face mask when I'm outside. Warms up the air I'm breathing in (iyswim)
Hot clear drinks
Saw GP #1 2 weeks ago who gave me a blue inhaler, relieves so not coughing quite so violently.
Saw GP #2 1 week ago who prescribed antihistamines to use as nighttime sedation - this has worked so finally getting some sleep. She's also referred me for chest X-ray.

It's a pita, virtual hugs to you all

DustyLee123 · 03/12/2023 15:18

I’m actually going to buy some of those Tena knickers next time I’m in a supermarket. Worrying about wetting the bed, on top of not being able to sleep, is awful.

Can I join? Walked round tesco earlier worried I'd fart / pee or poo myself with every cough 😫

Sometimes it's so violent a cough I throw up. 2 weeks in and feel like my brain and ribs are bruised

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/12/2023 16:32

I juice half a lemon into a mug, tablespoon of honey and then add boiling water.
I find sipping this soothing.

Ive been using my period pants 24/7 😣

FadedRed · 03/12/2023 21:08

Gargling with neat whisky/brandy, then swallow.
Teaspoon of honey swallowed ‘neat’.
Sleep propped up to semi-seated height, not lying flat.

Laiste · 03/12/2023 21:16

I recommend the Always Discreete sensitive bladder pads.

I had to get some last winter when i had a bastard of a cough 🙄

SpottyCrumpet · 03/12/2023 21:17

Honey is the only thing that helps me, just enough to hopefully get to sleep. Sympathies OP, it’s bloody miserable.

piscofrisco · 03/12/2023 21:18

I also have this-week 3. Started with ear infection, which morphed into a chest infection and this bloody cough. It's absolutely exhausting. Ive tried everything suggested here. And also ginger tea which helped my sore throat a bit. It's lousy. I'm thinking of going back to the gp tomorrow as I feel so rubbish and no sign of it getting better at all but I'm sure they will probably just say it's viral.

DustyLee123 · 03/12/2023 21:20

The trouble is that it goes on so long, and you’ve still got to work. You can’t be off for weeks

I've been doing kegal exercises a virus knocked my pelvic floor for six. Tena lady just wasn't enough I was wadding up loo roll as well. Luckily you can do them in bed, on the sofa, standing up. 😊

Honey and lemon in hot water helps. Whiskey at night as well. Prop yourself up in bed.

During covid patients were being given ventolin inhalers. Would be worth asking GP. Three members of my family ended up on antibiotics and steroids.

Whatever this lurgy is it's a doozy

Windthebloodybobbinup · 03/12/2023 21:38

I sympathise, it's horrible to have a cough that just won't shift. My go to is honey, lemon and cayenne pepper in hot water. The pepper distracts your throat from the tickling sensation.

Lanaa · 03/12/2023 03:07

This sounds ridiculous but works for a few hours and will give you some relief. Cover the soles of your feet in a thick coating of vicks vapour rub (the cheap ones work too) then put on a pair of thick socks and go to sleep. You won't cough for a few hours.

Wow just tried this on my daughter and it actually worked! Thanks for that Smile

Draconis · 03/12/2023 21:59

Give up all sugar for a few days.
Sugar causes inflammation. Giving it up reduces it.
I had a cough for weeks which got so bad I had a coughing fit in a supermarket where I could barely breathe. I was so desperate to do something, scoured the Internet, came across this advice, gave up all sugar and cough reduced then completely gone within 5 days.

wavingfuriously · 03/12/2023 22:14

Same here & you have my sympathy OP, I'm trying to consume lots fruit n vegs for Vit C

wavingfuriously · 03/12/2023 22:16

@piscofrisco let us know what GP says? Have given up with that lot! this is my third week of cold, cough and exhausted 😩

CharlotteStreetW1 · 03/12/2023 22:28

Week 4 but I think I'm on the tail end finally. I second the Vicks on the feet (even if it is a placebo effect) much to the amusement of DH. I have also been sleeping sitting up which fortunately I find quite comfortable. Also had to resort to Tena Ladies 🙄 Also had a blue inhaler which helped. Oh and a course of antibiotics in week 2 as it was an actual infection. Now they want me go to the asthma clinic. Last night was the first night I slept lying down (but still with three pillows). This cough has been the worst 😩

My sympathy to you all.

Draconis · 03/12/2023 22:30

And squats are really good for pelvic floor. I do them in the kitchen while kettle is boiling or stuff is simmering.

DustyLee123 · 04/12/2023 08:42

Unfortunately nothing helped, I’ve had another crap night. Rang the GP for an appointment and told to do a covid test before I attend. I thought we were just carrying on now, and treating it like cold/flu?

My son had this do a COVID test wtf. The attached chemist to the surgery were wtf too they didn't have them in stock. Luckily I still had some from last year. He tested negative. So surgery saw him. But they didn't ask him to bring in the test.

My advice blag it as a negative.

justasking111 · 04/12/2023 13:26

Btw the hospitals aren't testing. Some GPs are playing silly buggers
