What can I do about frozen car doors?

I’ve never had a car like this one for freezing shut! For the past few days every door has been frozen solid. I’ve had to pour warm water all over the door seals and handles to be able to get inside. It’s such a pain! Every other car I’ve ever had could be opened on cold mornings with just a sharp tug on the handle. Any tips for stopping this happening or for opening the doors in the morning without pouring copious amounts of water over my car?

park your car against the brickwork of your house, or a wall. The bricks will radiate enough heat to keep your car door just above freezing

Or drape a blanket over the door,

I could try the blanket thing…any tips for securing it?

Clean, dry, and lubricate (silicon lubricant by preference, WD40 if not) the rubber seals.

I think you are causing the problem. I think it got wet and froze and then using hot water makes it wet and then it freezes.

Not sure how you break this cycle though.

The seals need to be dry so that the ice can’t form

You can get half car covers at halford or Amazon they would help

We used to use Vaseline smeared on the door and rubber edges when we had a car that did this. (Once a week was enough to keep it free of ice) If we forgot, it was liberally doused in the windscreen de-icer you got in a can, as the spray bottled didn’t penetrate deeply enough.

ScarlettDarling · 03/12/2023 08:54

Ok, I’m going to order some silicon lubricant and will stick Vaseline on tonight. Stupidly my de icer spray is inside the (frozen shut) car so I can’t use that this morning. It’s a total pain!!
Thanks for the suggestions.

I have a cover that I put on my car, covers the windscreen and front windows. I'd neglected to put it on the other day and had to climb in through the passenger side that was closest to the house!

Get a passing man to wee on it.

I could swear my husband posted this thread😂 He’s having the same problem every morning including de-icer shut inside. Sorry op, no advice, just wanted to check if this is you DH? 🤣

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/12/2023 10:21

One of our cars does this because it's a convertible and the windows which are supposed to drop down to allow the doors to open got frozen stuck. This week I put a foil backed picnic blanket over the roof and then a half cover over that and it's been no problem ever since.
