Always seem to preface a harsh observation. I have noticed variations on this introduction all over the site. And even though they are not intended for me, I feel scared on behalf of the recipient. Is that the intention or do some people use these phrases with love?

It's the new 'no offence'

I'm not being funny but......

I'm not being funny but......

My ex used to always say that before saying something negative or critical. And she was right in that I never found it remotely funny.

I normally find that if someone says ‘I’m not being so & so but…” that’s exactly
what they are being and they know it.

@EarthlyNightshade

Exactly 😊

“With respect” is a fairly big one in the lawyer world. I don’t tend to use the shorthand phrases, if I’m saying something that might offend then I will caveat to the nth degree and preface it with “I can’t find the perfect way to say this but it’s really not meant to upset you” or something. But yes, it’s either because the response is a valid/sincere one which might be received badly or alternatively it’s someone who wants to radiate faux-concern/kindness. You can usually tell from context. The latter aren’t being very nice.

I imagine it said in that voice adults use in group situations to kids they want to tell off but not want to tell them off in front of their parents

'Little darling do you think you should put that cute little AK-47 down please sweetheart'

Our school has started to send every email beginning with 'this is a gentle reminder'. It's getting right on my tit.
