Very high blood pressure

I've known for a while that my blood pressure is on the high side but don't really take much notice.
I had an GP appointment recently where it was checked and I was told it needed to be kept an eye on.
During a later discussion with a GP, he told me he wanted me to take two recordings every day for a week, to see what medication would be appropriate (!)
I've done that now and the average reading is 159/90.
I've been given a telephone appointment for three weeks time.
Does anyone have any idea what happens now?

In an effort to reassure you I don’t think that is massively high. Mine was 230/130 on diagnosis. Now well in the normal range on four tablets a day.

You’ll be prescribed medication, maybe a referral, not sure. By the time I saw the cardiologist my GP had sorted me out so my medication wasn’t altered but I had several scans and tests.

It should be about 120/80 so whilst it's high its not very high. Mine was 215/130 when it was picked up and I'm now on medication to help but tbh it's often higher than your reading even with 2 sets of tablet to control it.

That a normal BP, albeit on the higher end.

They’ll consider medication to bring it down. I wouldn’t worry too much.

Fair point @EveWinter, as your reading would prompt immediate action.
Having been used to a BP on the low side most of my life, I'm honestly a bit shocked - and it is classed as stage 2 by the NHS.
I have been feeling generally grotty for a while, but I'm not sure if this is why.

My last reading was 170/110. You're fine.

Your blood pressure is at a level where immediately you're not at risk but if it were to stay that high long term you'd be at increased risk of things like heart attacks and strokes. They might do some blood tests to rule out treatable causes of high blood pressure and check your kidney function etc and then start you on tablets to lower it so that your risk of heart attacks and strokes long term is reduced.

That's not very high so I wouldn't worry too much before the appointment.

They will probably also talk about lifestyle and diet, see if there are changes there
