Barrington Stoke are books for children with dyslexia that are age appropriate interest wise but with easily decodable words. https://www.barringtonstoke.co.uk/product-category/all-titles/9-plus/

Main thing is to find books that she enjoys so much she wants to read them rather than it being a chore

My 9 year old loves the Tom Gates series. They are more cartoony but great for reluctant readers.

Go into the library- they’ve loads of early readers that don’t have tons of words and she’ll enjoy picking one. Unfortunately book shops leap from very young to eg Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl , David Walliams etc (from someone who works in a book shop!!)

stayathomer · 01/12/2023 14:04

Ps Hannah sparks books have less than a hundred pages but not sure if they’d have too many words on a page

If you are close to her I would recommend a subscription to the charity Listening Books.

My son has severe dyslexia (he's 25 now and doing fine albeit still dyslexic). He still uses these audio books!

It enabled him to listen to books that he was interested in and that improved his vocabulary immensely so that he kept up with his peers in terms of vocabulary and comprehension and also didn't learn to hate books.

When he started about 15 years ago he was sent CDs in the post then it went to the ipods but it's mainly by download now.

Do take a look at them Listening Books

Thanks everyone. it's a gift for my friends daughter. I went for the Barrington Stoke collection which matches interest age to reading level. She's not a recultant reader but does find it tough. Hopefully she will enjoy these 🥰

Clarice Bean books by Lauren Child. There is a whole series but there is a Christmas one called Clarice Bean Think Like an Elf and it can be read as a stand alone book if you don't want to commit to a full series.

Clarice does question the existence of Father Christmas in the book, but it's nothing that she won't of heard in school at that age.

It's a good book with nice illustrations and not too much writing on each page so it can give the illusion of being a long book without being a slog to get through.
