If you or DH works night shifts, how much sleep do you get?

Wondering if 5 hours is normal/sustainable.
DH is doing 60 hour weeks atm with overtime just so we can save a bit more money. He usually manages to sleep 6:30-11:30am. He claims to feel fine but I saw an article that says night shifts aren’t good for your health long term.

He also does days and usually sleeps around the same then, 10pm-4am approx.

He does catch up and manage 9 hours sleep on days off.

Both Dh and myself seem to sleep less when doing nights. Dh around 4-6 hours and for me around 6 hours and I’m awake. But the downside is we both nanna nap a lot more and tend to take a 10 min snooze on breaks. (No coincidence that neither of has much time for daytime numpties. )

Dh has done nights for 30 odd years. Whereas I tend to do them in a shift pattern and as I’ve got older they definitely are harder to do, which is a shame as I love nights.

I don’t. I now work 1 set night every night and don’t sleep in the day before or the day after because I don’t have the childcare to do that.
I used to have childcare and work a random shift pattern and usually slept 4-5hrs in between 2 night shifts and sleep for a couple of hours before the first night and after the last night.
It’s true that night shifts aren’t good for your health for many reasons but they need to be done.

Night Shift is pretty terrible for long term health, 5 hours doesn’t seem long term sustainable.
when I worked Night Shift, I still felt dead after 7+

My husband works a mix of day and night shifts and will generally sleep 6:30am-11:30am after nights. I think if your job is solely night shifts though you should be getting more than 5 hours' sleep.

I did 30 years nights (nursing) originally I did 5 nights,(9.15pm to 7am) I slept about 3 hours. We all took night nurse and similar things to try and sleep. Then the shift changed several times and ended up as: 7.30pm to 8am. I worked 3 nights,2 together, then a break. I'm retired now, but the last night at work I couldn't sleep at all in the day. Then when I drove home (50 miles) I couldn't sleep. Often my ward manager gave me Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I was beyond tired. I have never slept longer than 5 hours. I kept reading I would get dementia, breast cancer,a compromised immune system. None of these things happened. I actually never had a cough/cold, sickness virus for over 20 years, in fact my family cannot remember the last time. When I returned to work after having my last baby, I didn't even go to bed, till she went to a playgroup at 4 for a couple of hours.
