I think I’m a little bit disturbed by the new film coming out with Emma Stone in it..

Apparently it’s called Poor Things and is based on a book. The premise is, a foetal brain is transplanted into an adult body..and we watch as this brain rapidly ages. So basically see a woman act like a baby and toddler. It’s also very sexually graphic, though also apparently it’s only when her brain reaches maturity does she begin to explore.

Maybe there’s more to it. Maybe the book makes a lot of sense. Maybe I’m being too sensitive but this really doesn’t sit right with me

Mark Ruffalo is a brilliant actor. His performance as twins (one with schizophrenia) in I Know This Much is True was extraordinary. Having said that, I won't be seeing it!

Soubriquet · 01/12/2023 07:20

I must say I’ve never seen any of the directors films, so I realise I’m literally judging the book by the cover here.

It looks really good. I don't see the problem? If its not your cup of tea, dodge it!

Foolosophy · 01/12/2023 07:35

@Amortentia
Wow, that’s the most brilliant and intriguing review I’ve read in a very long time! Will read and try to go to Glasgow as soon as possible. (Forget the movie!)

ChristmasTreeMagic · 01/12/2023 07:44

We saw it as part of a film festival & absolutely loved it. Its shocking & funny & thought-provoking & not what you think it's going to be. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo & Willem Dafoe are outstanding in it. I expect there will be Oscar nominations for sure.
The sets / costumes etc are incredible & it was actually laugh out loud funny in parts.

Alliswell3 · 01/12/2023 07:46

I just finished the book. I really enjoyed it. Definitely disturbing.

Ostryga · 01/12/2023 07:49

I’m sad it isn’t set in Glasgow. The book is excellent and I can’t wait for the film. Stone is exciting in these type of roles, I adored her in The Favourite.

refreshingseahorse · 01/12/2023 07:50

Search youtube for 'born sexy yesterday' - that's the trope that makes this creepy.

I'm torn, I loved 'the favourite', and the trailer looks pretty, but the concept is also a bit blech.

Trixiefirecracker · 01/12/2023 08:00

How can you be disturbed by something you have never seen and not really know what it is about? It actually sounds really interesting and am looking forward to seeing it with an open mind.

kiki50 · 01/12/2023 08:05

actors queue up around the block to star in this director's movies, so he can take his pick of A list stars who want an oscar nomination. Personally, I think he's the emperors new clothes...

Spinet · 01/12/2023 08:11

I would reserve judgement until you see it. If it were a film that was just ha ha look at this woman degrading herself I would agree with you, but I very much doubt it is. It's good to watch things that make your mind go to weird places sometimes, otherwise we'd never think of anything new would we.

OurfriendsintheNE · 01/12/2023 08:19

This sounds really interesting and I think I might read the book now from others’ descriptions. Gothic science fiction with gender and Scottish politics sounds great. Not your intention but thanks OP Grin

Stephisaur · 01/12/2023 11:35

From this thread it sounds like the film will be shit but I do think I want to check out the book 😂

DaisyDoor · 01/12/2023 11:41

Sounds great, I’ll watch it.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/12/2023 11:51

If you look at the comments under the trailer it's obvious why Emma Stone wants to do it, it has Lead Actress Oscar Nomination written all over it.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 01/12/2023 12:27

@Stephisaur given that the only people on the thread who have actually seen the film have said it was great / interesting/ good & a load of people who have not seen it nor read the book are saying its bad why would you say its shit? 😅

Stephisaur · 01/12/2023 12:32

@ChristmasTreeMagic I instantly bin off any film that changes the original location - you can usually guarantee that it will then bear little to no resemblance to the original story.

I guess it might be an ok film in its own right, but the film synopsis isn't selling it to me as much as the book synopsis 😂

I’m so put off this film partly because it isn’t set in Glasgow and that just seems strange. The other thing is that the book was written by Alistair Grey and if you know anything about him, for the film to have no connection to Scotland just seems so wrong. I’m not sure he’d be very happy about that.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 01/12/2023 17:31

As far as I can recall the film doesn't explicitly state where the early parts are set & Willem Da Foe's character definitely has a Scottish accent in it. Why is everyone saying its not set in Glasgow?

Having seen the film I don't think it really impacts anything- its also set in Paris & Lisbon etc but not as we'd recognise them as they're portrayed in a very imaginative stylized way.

At the end of the day people will either gp to see it or they won't but I think it would be a shame for this to be the reason why not.

Its a very thought provoking film & I've some some brilliant conversations with people about it since & i can't say that about the majority of films.

Prrambulate · 25/12/2023 00:16

Curious if the film presents Emma’s foray into prostitution as liberation / empowerment?

I know the book presents multiple perspectives, unreliable narrators etc, but I also think this movie jettisons that postmodern angie.

Soubriquet · 30/11/2023 21:16

Fair enough. Just surprises me that “big names” are taking part. I mean Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo are two big name actors

Looks good to me based on the trailer. It's arthouse, right up the alley of big name actors. Shows range and ripe for award nominations.

I've seen this and loved it. If you like the director you will enjoy.
Botha leads were very good and think there will be Oscar nominations for both Stone and Ruffalo.
There is more sex than I have ever seen in a movie!

Ah thanks for this part.

That's me not ever watching it then. Cba to continually skip unnecessary and self-gratifying sex scenes. If I wanted to watch sex on screen (which I don't), not to mentions lots of it, I'd easily find porn, which is where I think they belong.

Absolutely this. And it’s always sexualising the woman. To be clear, not showing her sexuality, but sexualising her for a perceived male audience. I’m so utterly fed up of it.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 25/12/2023 02:33

Well, I'm sure you'll all make up your own minds based on whatever criteria....but having seen it, it's a really well made, funny, thought provoking, memorable film and imo you'll miss out by not watching it.

I’ve seen it and agree with this.
