What is the trick to deicing car?

23 replies

user6776 · 29/11/2023 23:41

Already fed up of it taking about 15 minutes each morning to defrost my car. Even putting the heating on full whack does nothing.

I use lukewarm water in a jug over the windscreen but even then it doesn't fully clear it.

Is there a quick tip that I'm missing?

Honestly use a deicing spay, apply 5 minutes before you want to leave.
Trigger action, or aerosol spray works a treat!

Have a look at the reviews...

Put the heat on full blast and use a scraper.

Blipeuy · 29/11/2023 23:46

Deicing spray, keep the windows open and a/c on when blasting the blowers to combat the inside

Buying a car with a properly heated windscreen has made a massive difference for us but de-icer spray makes such a difference on the side windows. It's really cheap in most bargain shops or supermarkets.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 29/11/2023 23:52

Trade it in for a Ford with Fast Defrost.

i get in mine, by the time im sorted, lights/radio/seat belt etc etc it's defrosted & im good to go.

it could do with it on all door windows too, but they don't take too long to drive (up & down a few times)

but that's an extreme solution!

costco sell de-icer in a yellow aerosol that my friend swears by.

Another friend has a DH that goes out & does it for her while she sits in the warm with a coffee!!

user6776 · 29/11/2023 23:52

@Blipeuy Won't it be even more freezing with A/C on though? 🥶

@Pinkpinkpink15 Getting myself a new DH seems like the solution here then 😂

I just poured warm water on the windscreen..it works!

Reallybadidea · 29/11/2023 23:54

I use quite warm water, I'd describe it as hand hot. Been doing it for years, never cracked the glass yet. I start at the windscreen and then give all the other windows a glug, then a second time on the windscreen. It demists the windscreen too.

HeddaGarbled · 29/11/2023 23:58

Yeah, definitely a de-icer spray. Works immediately. I like the trigger spray rather than the aerosol type as you get a better spray all over the windows. You can get them in supermarkets and garages as well as online. I always keep some in the car for leaving work as well. You can also spray into the door lock and onto wing mirrors.

Spottyhousecoat · 29/11/2023 23:58

We have an app you can start the car from with all the heating blasting I do this 15 mins before leaving although my neighbour did point out that you can get fined for this!!

I thought that too but did a trial after hearing this and yes, cold does better than heat. I think it is to do with moisture in the air. It's such a pita this time of year!

TerrysChocolateOrange · 30/11/2023 00:03

We use 70% de-icer on a spray mixed with 30% rubbing alcohol, works a treat.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/11/2023 00:04

Auto start. Not faffing around with water at any temperature when it’s -30 outside!

TerrysChocolateOrange · 30/11/2023 00:06

Well I say we, we are both retired by the time we open the curtains the sun is high in the sky…………… Ok Ok it is about 9.30.😂

Kpo58 · 30/11/2023 00:06

Why not just put a car cover on it to stop the ice from being on the windscreen in the first place?

I think you probably need to have got him 30 years ago & trained him up properly! He is lovely. You could see what's on the market, but it's a risky process!!

@Reallybadidea

its great you haven't had a problem. It's just luck though, you only need a slight chip for it to go all wrong!!

plus everyone doing this needs to be mindful of not creating a dangerously slippery bit of path/driveway as it freezes over again.

@Spottyhousecoat

or buried under their new patio.

its environmentally 💩 & incredibly inconsiderate of others who work different hours to you & are trying to sleep.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow

if it was -30 here, no one would be going out anywhere! 😂

when I was young I went to visit my aunty in Canada, I was well bemused by them plugging their car in when they parked it (& snow piles bigger than me!! Skating on a canal)

Scruffington · 30/11/2023 10:31

Fill a (leak proof) plastic bag for life with tap warm water, hold it up to the car windows. De-iced in seconds.
