Electric cars

Who else has no desire to buy one?

I have been wanting a brand new car for some time, but Honda, my preferred make is now moving heavily to hybrids and EV.

I think I will probably get a low mileage, 2 or 3 year old petrol Honda instead.

Why?

Choccolatebar · 29/11/2023 23:24

With electric cars, having to charge at inconvenient times, places and range anxiety can be problems.

Aren't EV's pricier to insure and service?

Why low mileage?

It can be a bad thing.

Oh here we go again. Another electric car bashing thread.

it’s very simple, in fact it’s no more difficult than choosing any car of any model or fuel type. If you don’t want one. Don’t buy one.

Raffington55 · 29/11/2023 23:27

There's also the minor issue that they can just randomly blow up at any time and can't be extinguished.

keye · 29/11/2023 23:27

The anxiety of having to stop on a long drive to hopefully find a charger free and try to keep an autistic child amused whilst doing so is enough to put me off.

DD has one, she only does city driving - it's very restrictive but it doesn't bother her

Choccolatebar · 29/11/2023 23:28

Why can low mileage be bad if it is a couple of years old from a main dealer.

I only drive about 6,000 miles a year.

I’m concerned about the disposal of batteries but next car will be hybrid or fully electric. Seems like the way forward. About half the cars in my street are electric now.

TeenLifeMum · 29/11/2023 23:29

We buy a 2-3 year old car rather than new though.

Whiterose23 · 29/11/2023 23:32

I had views similar to you until we got an electric car. Now I wouldn’t go back!
We drive a lot of long distance journeys and have never found charging an issue.
In the last year we’ve driven to Scotland and Cornwall and it’s been fine.

Oh god yes! Every journey, there they are, side of the road either in flames or out of charge. The entire road network is littered with broken down Polestars and exploded Teslas isn’t it? 😂

And not a fire in sight from an ICE vehicle. Not ever...

I only drive about 6,000 miles a year.

Because the vast majority of engine wear occurs before the car has teacher operating temperature.

So if all you journeys are a school run of a mile or so you will be wearing your engine. Whereas a car that has been driven at motorway speed for 12,000 miles a year would be a better option.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/11/2023 23:54

For teacher read reached.

Choccolatebar · 29/11/2023 23:55

Yes. You are correct.

I have an electric car. I charge it with solar panels so costs nothing.

And to the person who said they randomly blow up, what planet are you on?

Raffington55 · 30/11/2023 00:02

@AdobeWANKenobi - you're so hilarious aren't you?

Choccolatebar · 30/11/2023 00:14

I would not consider rediculously low miles, but a 2 year old car with 12,000 to 20,000 I would.

Yep. Probably because I’m not sniffing petrol fumes 😂

tobee · 30/11/2023 01:40

What about the insurance costs? My Dh job means he can barely get insurance as it is. This puts me off but quite keen otherwise.

FFS 🤦‍♀️

And before anybody adds it, the fire at Luton airport was started by a diesel. They think a Range Rover.

ICE cars are actually more likely to catch fire than EVs. I do wonder if it's that flammable liquid everybody is so keen on putting into them...

SparklingSparkle · 30/11/2023 02:33

My electric car is brilliant. The best care I've ever owned. But Mumsnet hate electric cars so someone will be along to tell you they're crap.
Mumsnet is packed with climate change denying people - quite a lot of which are bots of some description.
It would seem most people here love oil companies more than their own children.

Planet earth

MaidOfSteel · 30/11/2023 12:09

We have an electric car. My husband does most of the driving and he absolutely loves it. And I have to admit it is lovely to drive; smooth and responsive. I do get anxious about charging, so we do a bit of planning before long journeys and both have the ZapMap app for locating charge points nearby.

garlictwist · 30/11/2023 12:15

I'd love an electric car but as we can never park outside our house and don't have a drive I can't see how it's possible. I think they are great.
