Has anyone ever been stupid enough to leave money in the cash machine?

I just withdrew £30 quid from the cash machine.

I got a phone call as I was doing it and was distracted enough that I walked away without taking the cash.

I realised pretty quickly and walked back to the machine about 30 seconds to a minute later but the cash was gone.

I'm pretty sure no one else took it as the street was deserted while I was there no one was near the machine expect me.

Anyone have any idea what will happen? Will I get refunded? Do I need to speak to the bank?

It will be in the machine as the ATM takes it back in if the cash isn’t taken in a certain period of time. You need to call your bank and they’ll check the log of the machine and recredit you.

Me! £200 too! Got distracted by the sweets (it was inside the corner shop). When I realised at the till, they checked the cameras to see if it had been sucked back in and one of their regular customers had taken it, they couldn't believe it. Got the police involved and he had to return it and write me an apology, police made him do that. Glad I got it back.

Not me but found a wad in the machine when I went past it. As it was outside a big supermarket I took it and went straight in, the lady running back out with panic on her face told me it was hers 😂
I did check amount was the same and was just going to hand it to customer service though probably should have just let it go back in tbh.

It’s not easy to do now, as your card comes out last. So you’d literally have to take nothing. Leaving both cash and card behind,

My card came out first, always does.

DH did, a few years ago in Derby city centre, we got distracted and as walking away a woman was chasing after us and shouting. He was so delighted at her honesty he gave her a tenner and I heard her excitedly telling her mate she could buy the new top she wanted.

£300. 30 years ago. A fortune in 1994. I have never told anyone in real life 😳

30 years ago you couldn't take £300 out in one transaction. Did you do it twice?

idontlikealdi · 30/11/2023 13:58

I could take £300 out back then, my limit was £500 per transaction

EarlofShrewsbury · 30/11/2023 15:09

Withdrawal limit for me is £250 but if I'm using my own banks machine its £500 and has for been as long as I can remember.

If no one takes it, the machine will take it back. Happened to me once before and my bank said it happens more often than you'd think! I think it takes about 1 day for their systems to credit it back to your account. In the meantime you can only wait. If someone else took it then you'd have to make a report.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 30/11/2023 15:16

Once happened to me and I didn't even notice I hadn't taken it 🤷‍♀️.
I got a letter from the bank about a month later saying what had happened and they had credited it back to my account.

elf1985 · 30/11/2023 15:22

Ex bank manager here! It will be taken back by the machine, contact your bank, if it hasn't recorded automatically, they can fill in a request to visa. They will recount the machine and it will be out £30 and they will manually recredit it. Happens alot.

nauticant · 30/11/2023 15:28

I've done this TWICE. One time the machine sucked the money back up and another some lovely and kind person handed my £70 into the bank. Both times I got recredited.

HappyAxolotl · 30/11/2023 16:01

I left my cash once and the person queuing behind me for the cashpoint grabbed the money and chased me up the road to give it to me!

Underthemagnificentbeechtree · 30/11/2023 16:09

I did this twice in 10 minutes when at uni - the first by accident and the second because I wanted to see what would have happened the first time (it goes back in). So I had to ring the bank and explain the story and the chap on the line was properly laughing at my daftness - anyway it was fine and the money wasn’t debited.

I have a bet different banks or account types allowed different withdrawal limits.

My bank, in the 90s, had a maximum less than £300. I only remember because I wanted to take out £250 and would have had to go 2 separate days, so went inside and got it out via the teller.

TrashedSofa · 01/12/2023 14:09

No, but I've left the card. This kid about 8 ran after me with it. His mum had sent him, bless her.

EarlofShrewsbury · 04/12/2023 15:43

UPDATE- I got the money back today.

A bit late OP but: Yay!

Yes me, one Christmas had a few drinks, decided to stay out a little longer, went to wizzy machine & it was a different machine to one I normally use, this one gave out receipts first, so because I slightly drunk, walked away, realised seconds later I didn’t have the money- anyway went back to the machine where a young couple was using it, asked if I had left my money & they said no I certainly had not left any money- later saw them blind drunk & I said I hoped they had enjoyed a drink on me 😩he just smirked! That was 30 yrs ago (cash machines all have cameras now so would have mentioned it at the bank today)
