Is the car going to ice up tonight?

This may sound like a silly question but wondered if anyone knew how likely it is to ice up overnight?

It’s currently -3 and it’s not frozen at the moment so wasn’t sure!!

Nope. It’s cold. Cold is horrible. It makes me miserable. A bit of pointless not warm sun doesn’t help - and actually is actively grim because in the winter it’s mostly at a low angle blinding me.

Ah. I feel the same about hot weather. Oppressive, too bright and causes me to be irritable and fretful.

It does indeed take all sorts.

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 29/11/2023 22:59

Yes because there’s already a good covering of snow on it.

DrCoconut · 29/11/2023 23:01

I had to de ice my car to leave work today. And for the school run today and yesterday. One of the many things I hate about winter.

DrCoconut · 29/11/2023 23:03

I can't use a windscreen cover either as it will just get stolen.

Crucible · 29/11/2023 23:04

Glad I'm not the only one with the cover. It really helps. I also think spray bottle de-icer is better than aerosol canned stuff. I've got Prestone at the moment but the smell is vile.

Crucible · 29/11/2023 23:05

@DrCoconut it has flaps on each side that you shut into your two front car doors. It wouldnt get stolen.

Crucible · 29/11/2023 23:07

Cripes sorry about the miles of knitting.

Mine are also tucked into the doors, so can't really be stolen. Unless they really want to cut it off which would make it useless to them. Could find one of those in Halfords?

Ridiculous some around your way would actually steal them.

FreshWinterMorning · 29/11/2023 23:07

100% yes

DownNative · 29/11/2023 23:10

This is the one I've got from Halfords. Tuck flaps inside your doors and it can't be taken off easily.

Singleandproud · 29/11/2023 23:14

Were in Norfolk and I had to defrost mine this morning and have tucked it in its cover tonight.

DD was at rugby tonight (happily in shorts 🥶) and all the players coats and bags on the sidelines were frosted over

DrCoconut · 29/11/2023 23:16

i think i need to revise my windscreen cover shopping. i got my previous ones at poundland (logic being its not too bad if it gets taken).

Buy yourself a Ford & you'll never need to worry again - the Fast Defrost is amazing!!

It's supposed to be -2° here overnight, but I swear they take that reading from the warmest place in my location I'd say it'll easily get down to -4. I'm almost guaranteed an icy car.

@Schooldinner1 why is it so important tonight??

Totally agree about buying a Ford car. Better still, I have an app on my phone so I can start my car from inside the house and it is still locked. It runs for 5 minutes blasting out hot air with front and rear windscreens on then switches off. I can run it twice before having to go to the car which is usually enough to clear the ice.

AlanThePig · 29/11/2023 23:29

My pond is frozen solid 😳
This morning I discovered my mini has a pre conditioning setting on the app, just set planned departure time, so when I got in it to go out it was toasty and defrosted. Ain’t modern life amazing!?😂

Schooldinner1 · 30/11/2023 05:38

@Pinkpinkpink15 we have to leave early this morning and need to allow extra time to defrost the car! Set my alarm for 5.30am and can confirm the car is iced up! 🥶

@Schooldinner1 stay warm today. That's an early start.

@Ihateslugs

what do you need inside the car to make that work, I think that might be newer technology than mine has (FF2016)

Given how much I curse idlers, I couldn't in all good consciousness do it, but it does sound lovely.

I just shove another jumper on under my coat & grin & bear it for a few minutes, it soon warms up.

i need to get a new car, I'd like something a bit fun, but not having Ford fast defrost is something I can quite come to terms with!

id like a soft top something in the summer, but not in the winter, but I don't have the parking.

@Schooldinner1

i hope you've been somewhere you could warm
up!!

I leave at 6:30, so from now on in I'll expect the do the car pretty much most mornings.

my cousin had a long drive this morning, they had to leave at 4am to get to the hospital on time 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

Plenty of other brands have heated windscreens now too. I had a mini with it. @Pinkpinkpink15 2016 is definitely old/new enough to have the tech as I had a P reg with it but I think it's only on higher specs - I have a feeling my 2015 Mondeo doesn't have it but it is a high spec. Not sure. It's the same technology the back windscreen has had since the beginning of time - I had a capri with red lines on the back screen that heated it. That was c reg.

My 2010 Land Rover had it too. It had a clever little setting where if you gels down the wipers as you turned the engine off it lifted them over the screen so they defrosted when the heated screen came on.
Windscreen defrosting is tech that’s at least 13 years old, probably a lot more than that and certainly not unique to Ford’s.

Helluvawomen · 03/12/2023 01:35

Please share the link to windscreen cover that sounds amazing,

hillyholman · 03/12/2023 01:39

Hate to tell you all but it's 7 degrees where I am in Cornwall tonight

Peacheroo · 03/12/2023 08:48

@AdobeWanKenobi Land Rover and Ford were once part of the same company so share the tech

liveforsummer · 03/12/2023 09:00

I bought some de icer from Asda that you spray on the night before and it prevents the windows freezing. Doesn't totally work in heavy frost but definitely helps loads. A quick wipe rather than laborious scraping.
