How often do you bathe your toddler?

A conversation with a friend has left me wondering if I'm really gross!

My 2 year old has a bath twice a week - usually one weekend one where she will have her hair washed, nails cut, ears cleaned etc and one shorter midweek one. That's it, unless we've been doing something like painting.

Friend said her toddler has a bath every night. Is this normal?

I wash her face every morning and evening and frequently her hands, is it enough?!?

Every night, mine was at a Montessori nursery with forest every afternoon in all weathers. He was regularly filthy.
Now (4 nearly 5) he's more likely to have a shower but still has a bath 2/3 times a week, because school/homework etc we have less time

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 29/11/2023 19:04

Every day. It always baffles me when people don't have to do it every day - he's always filthy come bed time! (I should caveat that he is prone to dry skin and I do use moisturiser on him as part of his bedtime routine which I potentially wouldn't have to do if he wasn't bathing every day)

PrincessesRUs · 29/11/2023 19:04

Never had a dry skin problem so every day - I like to make sure their bottom is properly clean when they've been in nappies

Once a day for my 2 and 3.5 year old could count one hand the times they've missed a bath/ shower, it's basic hygiene, I wouldn't skip a day having a wash myself so why would I not wash my kids. Plus one of them sat in a nappy all day, grim.

Blanketpolicy · 29/11/2023 19:06

We used do so it every day with ds as jumping in a shallow bath was much easier than a flannel wash (for me anyway as bath time was dh's job 🤣) and he enjoyed it, we did his hair daily too as it was short but if there was long hair involved I wouldnt wash it every day.

I'm in my 50s and one of 5 siblings and we had weekly baths, but we had daily washes in the kitchen sink (sitting on a towel on draining board, feet in sink) when small as we were out playing daily and needed them!

mrssunshinexxx · 29/11/2023 19:06

@Youcancallmeirrelevant isit a waste of money for yourself to have a wash every night ?! Honestly the things I read on here blow my mind.

mrssunshinexxx · 29/11/2023 19:07

@anastasiakrupnik I honestly can't believe what I'm reading on here, that is fairly filthy you know?? Let me guess, you wash more often than once a week though.

I'm the same as you op plus shower at swimming.

Oh yeah forgot about this, that's once a week but only a rinse

I do bath time every night with 3 year old DS as part of his bedtime routine. He does get properly grubby every day though, so he needs a wash.

He’s not one of those nice, tidy looking children; he’s the kid who falls straight in a muddy puddle. So it’s just practical to wash him every night.

eardefender · 29/11/2023 19:11

every time she does a poo, she only does them at home. So every other days she gets a shampoo and wash in the shower in the bath. sometimes has a bubble bath at the weekend just for fun. I cant leave her with a pooey bum even when she was a baby it had to be a full bath after a poo.

Haydug · 29/11/2023 19:12

Twice a week. Seems enough! Never been a part of our bedtime routine. In fact, I always find he takes longer to go down after baths, wierdly!

BIossomtoes · 29/11/2023 18:09

Every night. Helps them sleep apart from anything else.

That's a bit ott
I used to bath or shower mine often in the morning or even afternoon. And not alway everyday.
Is that lazy parenting?

alexdgr8 · 29/11/2023 19:14

how do you clean her ears ?

I never mentioned lazy parenting. I answered the OP - mine was bathed every night. It’s hardly OTT, I’ve showered every day my entire life.

AntiHop · 29/11/2023 19:19

2 year old had a shower 3 times a week. She's decided she does not like baths. Dh and I both work full time and fitting in a nightly shower would be a struggle.

newyearsresolurion · 29/11/2023 19:20

Every other day

roarrfeckingroar · 29/11/2023 19:21

Every night

MammaTo · 29/11/2023 19:23

Every night as part of a bedtime routine. Sometimes twice a day of a weekend if we’re going somewhere like a family party or christening etc so he’s nice and clean after breakfast.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/11/2023 19:23

When ours were toddlers they had a bath nearly every night as part of their bed time routine. They loved it!

Toddler nappies are pretty gross and you want to think they got a proper wash every day. Wouldn't you?

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 29/11/2023 19:26

It depends - she enjoys a bath so we plan for every night, but if she's too tired and not dirty, we forgo one or occasionally we'll go upstairs and she'll say 'no, don't want bath' and we'll miss it. We probably average 4-5 times a week on average I think.

Pickledprawn · 29/11/2023 19:27

Everyday, I like to give her privates a soak in the bath otherwise they get sore and also her hands because god knows where they have been! I don't use bubble bath, just water. But if you wash their hands, face and privates with a flannel they don't need a bath everyday.

how do you clean her ears ?

What a bizarre question.

Dayoftheduvet · 29/11/2023 19:29

A minimum of 3 times a week, sometimes daily though and quite often twice a day because DD absolutely loves baths and showers so very often when I am having a shower in the morning (which is every morning) she will want to come in with me, then by the end of the day she's been playing out in the mud or getting covered in food at dinnertime so she has another bath. I don't use soap or shampoo on her everything though so as not to dry out her skin.

Caspianberg · 29/11/2023 19:31

Twice a week. He has extra shower sometimes or if at swimming

At nappy age we used washable cloths, so he had a proper bum wash at every change not just a wet wipe. So his bum
was washed 7-8 times a day. Hardly scummy.

Cloth flannels used after every meal or snack from weaning so hands and face also washed multiple times a day.

If hands, bum and faces are being washed multiple times a day, most small children don’t need daily full baths. Obviously days with sand/ suncream/ extra muddy puddle then you use your initiative and bath extra that week

Top and tail is fine in between baths.
