complex PTSD and dissociative disorder

ScaredAndPanicky · 29/11/2023 16:47

I have been diagnosed with Complex PTSD and dissociative disorder after suffering years of abuse as a child and now leaving an abusive marriage after over 20 years.
I am just so exhausted from being tense and anxious all the time. Just wondered if anyone has had similar with some good news stories that it will get better at some point. Or any tips that worked well for you.
I have been told I'm not well enough yet for any form of counselling.

so what is the plan before then? are you under a mental health care team?

I am under a mental health team but not seeing them again for another week. They have just said I'm not well enough for counselling yet. But haven't said how to get well enough. They just phone every couple of days to see how I am.

Some trauma stabilisation work would be helpful, is there a local charity that offers it? To help you work on grounding strategies etc before you have therapy.
I have CPTSD, loads better following psychotherapy (not counselling) and long term SSRI for anxiety.

Also, vinyasa yoga can be helpful to calm the nervous system following trauma

Hi OP, I have these diagnoses (also after a long abusive relationship) as well as BPD. I am actually at a private residential mental health retreat/rehab type place as it had got so bad and it was so hard to get help on the NHS - it has been great for me so far but is obviously not within many people's reach financially.

I am currently doing a lot of CBT and will be starting EMDR shortly. My therapist recommended starting with CBT as I was such a mess and so dissociated initially - EMDR sounds like the best treatment available for trauma but apparently it is in itself very traumatic/triggering and you also need to work on the dissociation first for it to be effective. I wonder if that's what the mental health team meant wrt your treatment? If you can't get treatment now via the NHS (or afford to go private) then I would maybe look for some books or online resources to work through on CBT for trauma and dissociation for now. Several people here with the same issues as me have found TRE therapy helpful as well although it wasn't really for me.

Good luck x
