Self assessment tax return - child benefit

Please does anyone know the actual answer to this?!

I had a pay rise in 2020 that took me over 60k, cancelled the CB claim and filled in the self assessment, all fine.

HMRC are now messaging me about completing one for this tax year. Do I need to do it? Am fully PAYE and obviously not claiming the CB.

Are you earning over £100k as that will trigger a return ( for 22/23 at least). Otherwise perhaps interest in excess of £500? The tax return may have nothing to do with child benefit

Badbadbunny · 29/11/2023 16:38

If they instruct you to submit a tax return, then you have to do one or will be fined if you don't, whether there's anything to declare or not.

However, if you ring them, tell them that you've nothing to declare, depending on the helpfulness of their call centre worker, they "May" withdraw the filing instruction, in which case they'd send you a letter saying that, and only then would you be excused from filing one.

If they say you have to do it don't ignore it, phone and ask them to cancel if you don't think you should do. Your personal circumstances will decide

We had this problem. Do the self assessment and depending when they last paid CB will depend on what tax year it is - as they will probably want you to pay CB back. We were chased for CB over two years after stopping it. A right pain. You can then call them and say you doesn’t to do self assessment

FallingAutumnLeaf · 29/11/2023 17:13

Yes, you need to do it.
After a few years, they will send you a message saying you don't need to any more.
Don't ignore HMRC in this case!

LIZS · 29/11/2023 17:17

You need to do one until hmrc say otherwise, usually a few years on from your last tax repayment.

wildwestpioneer · 29/11/2023 17:36

I would fill it out online, it'll come back that you owe nothing. You'll have to do it for a couple more years and they they'll tell you, you can stop filling it in

NextPrimeMinister · 29/11/2023 19:27

I was asked to complete for the second year which I did and the third year had an email saying I could opt out if my circumstances hadnt changed. So I did.

Same reason as you for the first tax return.

I only received child benefit for part of the tax year for 21/22 as then got a pay rise taking me over the threshold - so I stopped receiving it (had the formal confirmation from HMRC eg ) My tax return though says I have to pay back MORE than I received in child benefit (was about 3 months of payments) ??? Any ideas?

I'm going to guess that the tax on your job wasn't deducted properly- either due to a tax code issue or you receive additional taxable benefits.

They don't claw back more than the child benefit amount due.

thelonemommabear · 29/11/2023 20:04

Yeah definitely don't receive any other taxable benefits. And I received 3 months of CB circa £430 for April May and June but my tax return says I have to pay back £590! I'm inclined just to pay it 😩 as it will be the last one I do as haven't had CB since July 2022 now

Do you get health insurance through your work? Not sure why but for some reason my work health insurance taxable benefits don’t get taxed on PAYE so I always wind up owing £100ish each year, drives me bananas but I figure it all comes out in the wash

FallingAutumnLeaf · 30/11/2023 08:10

If you are certain that there is no tax outstanding from anything else, there will be a mistake somewhere.
They won't claim back more than they paid you, unless you owe tax for some other reason.

alwaysmovingforwards · 30/11/2023 08:21

If they request, JFDI.

idontlikealdi · 30/11/2023 13:30

Thanks everyone, I will try and speak to a human at HMRC. Def no tax due, and last received CB dec 20.

Tax adviser here. Give them a call and tell them you no longer meet the criteria to be in self assessment and they should cancel the tax return. Although to be honest, the time it takes to get through, you might be quicker just doing the tax return!
