Fungal toenail cure for stubborn case - not the tablets!

chr1stmastree · 28/11/2023 09:40

For various reasons I can't use the tablets which they prescribe and can cause liver issues. Are there ANY over the counter things which actually work?? I've tried some to no avail. This toenail has been like this in and off for nearly a decade! I also have to go swimming each week with my young child for their lesson which probably isn't helping!

Please, any real life remedies which actually worked?? Anyone ever had this for years and years and finally got rid?

Curanail was really helping. Then I went on holiday and painted over it- was really stinging after a couple of days. Thought I was going to lose the nail. Looked a bit black. Left the varnish on through horror of what I might find and now it’s growing there is a nice healthy nail coming through- fungal bit almost grown out now. Weird!

I had the worst 2 big toenails for 15 years, tried everything (dedication morn& night) listerine, Vicks, tea tree oil, paint on stuff. Had to wear full shoes every summer as they were really bad. Everything I tried was just so time consuming.

In March I started taking fluconozole (not prescribed) & I now have over half white/pink thin nails! I think another 6 months it will be fully gone after all these years.

unfortunately, I think a bad infection will need tablets or a chiropodist to drill little holes & treat.

I've tried a lot of different things including holes drilled into my toes. It cost a LOT too, £300, maybe more.

It didn't bloody work!

I'm trying the bleach method! If it works for fungal infections in horses then that's good enough for me.

Yes I’ve heard it’s super expensive. I used to spray the green dettol mold/mildew on & wait for 10 mins before my shower!

I'm curious on the Lumea laser. I have one.

But the target area of the gun is quite big, 1cm by 2.5cm maybe, and that all needs to be flat against your skin for it to do the zap... how do you do that on a toe?

I did try the tabletas and they made no difference at all - this Excilor stuff was what sorted mine! Only thing that worked and I think I tried everything!

Me too, had it for a decade and tried all of those home remedies. It got so bad that my nail split and part-detached. I started using Excilor in June this year and I’ve got a lovely fresh nail growing in. It’s not time-consuming at all, peel off after a shower and paint it back on. Takes all of one minute (although you have to let it dry for 5mins). Got mine on Amazon.

TeaTurtle · 28/11/2023 22:19

It was always hydrogen peroxide (an oxygen based sort of bleach) for thrush in the soles of horses’ hooves.

It is definitely not Domestos chlorine bleach!! 😮😱☠️

I can thoroughly recommend the alcohol treatment

ManyATrueWord · 28/11/2023 22:21

I went to someone who drilled tiny holes in my toenail and then applied lamisil. Worked like a dream.

CasparBloomberg · 28/11/2023 22:31

For years I thought I had an incurable fungal toe nail, otc treatments made minimal impact and it never went. Never saw a doctor about it.
Then I happened on a photo of a psoraitic nail. Had no idea my psoriasis may be the cause. Used my prescribed topical steroid on it and saw an obvious change within a few weeks and it's almost grown out now.
If you have psoriasis anywhere else, might be worth a try.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 28/11/2023 22:32

Cure it completely? Not sure. Ever since I had a huge bout that did need treatment via tablets those toes are now my weak point.

I had a few weeks of reprieve after I used the footner hard skin treatment.

I also made some calendula oil (calendula petals in some olive oil, left for a few weeks in a dark cupboard) and when I regularly rub it around my toes I have no issue. Leave it a couple of days and it comes back. So not a cure as such, but might be if I used it religiously for an extended period of time.

I think keeping nails dry is the key I think

I suffered for ten years, tried most things and some success with terbafine but worry about effects on liver

I lockdown 1 my toe nail got so bad it went black and lifted off .,, to my surprise it grew back healthy , I think because I was wearing flip flops everyday so it stayed dry

i now change socks half way through the day if out all day and that helps … also try to let my shoes dry out between wears (rotate pairs so have a couple of days to dry out)

DatingDinosaur · 28/11/2023 23:13

My chiropodist recommended tea tree oil to be applied twice a day until the diseased nail had grown out. He also suggested buying a pack of cheap nail files (those cardboard emery boards) to "rough up" the nail surface before applying it then throw the file away so you don't re-infect. Also, if possible, wash all shoes and treat them with an anti-fungal spray (eg. something for athletes foot).

He told me it works by preventing new fungal growth and killing the existing growth - so the nail might start looking worse before the healthy nail starts to grow through. After a few months you could see the healthy nail starting to come through. Still carry on until the last of the diseased nail has been cut off.

It takes literally a few minutes to do a quick couple of swipes with the emery board then a couple of dots of tea tree oil on a tissue rubbed into the nails and between the toes.

ItWasntMyFault · 28/11/2023 23:51

Sudocrem worked for me - put it on night and morning both on top of the nail and also under the tip of the nail

cleverusernamehere · 29/11/2023 00:59

The stuff in the blue box, can you use it on more than one nail?
I think mine has spread to fingers

Why do we think nail varnish makes it worse? Please Can the chiropodist explain?

LovelaceBiggWither · 29/11/2023 02:46

Mine went after I was diagnosed with diabetes and treated. Nothing else worked at all.

I was just going to ask exactly this!

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/11/2023 03:55

Am also having success with Excilor. The fungus is nearly grown out. Only in my big toe. I got this last year from chill blains and putting on lots of cream to calm the pain.

Lacuna treatment!!!

AzureBlue99 · 29/11/2023 06:34

If you are applying stuff to one nail that is a brush type thing and tempted to use it on the other nails as a preventative, don't. It can spread it from the brush.

I keep remembering stuff from my battle with fungus. Sorry for the multiple posts. There are different types of nail fungus

I had one a year or so ago.
I had a treatment called clearanail at a foot health practitioner. I used lamisil every day at home and saw the person every 3 weeks. It took about 5-6 months to clear up completely

I’ve tried Vicks and tea tree oil on my resistant athletes foot. They didn’t work, although they calmed it. But it’s spread now.

watching with interest.

My DH was advised to use Potassium Permanganate on his Athletes foot infection. Its a purple liquid used as a foot soak treatment. You can buy it over the counter in a pharmacy.
It stained his toenails purple but sorted the infection out.
