So sure our DD ADHD - would you mind sharing your Childs early signs?

DC just turned 8, from reading the NHS Website and Various other sources - she's showing common traits of ADHD (or ADD, who knows..) Last Year she was also been diagnosed with Epilepsy and I know the two are very closely linked.

Would you mind sharing how you knew your Child might have ADHD? We're unsure of what to do next.. Speak to School? GP? Her Epilepsy specialists?

Any advice much appreciated!

Sorry watching as think the same about ds2. Never stops moving, never sleeps, spins, socially behind his peers (very immature). Can't do anything without being micromanaged. Very easily distracted.

In the case our DS, things that in retrospect might be connected:

  • Physical development was quite late, as in crawling, walking, learning to jump, skip, run
  • A lot of words quite early on but quite a long time until he could really talk in sentences compared to our oldest
HerRoyalNotness · 27/11/2023 18:15

Hyper focused on one topic
only did well at school with something he was interested in
difficulty sleeping
distracted
really big emotions
needed order and control
went through cycles of having different tics, wanting to make himself sick
lack of impulse control

he also had epilepsy and now classed as a seizure disorder

Thanks all for the replies so far, There are some similarities but I guess every child is different!
DD is so very bright, she's charming and confident, has the most accurate memory and can reel off facts that astound us all!
But we're really struggling at School, she will not put Pen to paper as such.. ever.
Her writing and reading is great, and vocally the Teacher has said she can answer anything that's asked of her - but she will not do any actual School 'work'. Instead spends her time drawing intricate comic strips or battles from History books!? There's also the fidgeting, she rocks back and forth on her Chair, over and over again during Lessons. She spends a lot of time interrupting and is fiercely competitive, always has to be first regardless.
We don't know what to do or where to turn!

He doesn’t stop moving, even when he’s (finally!) asleep. Fell off his seat twice during the ADHD assessment.
needs to be micromanaged with just about everything, and even needs reminding to keep on task when eating or he forgets what he’s doing.
lack of impulse control
impressive amounts of energy and enthusiasm
hes a terrible sleeper even on melatonin. I’ve no idea how he has so much energy on as little sleep as he gets!
will start tasks or games but drift off to something else without finishing them
he’s very charming, friendly and charismatic, with a great memory for facts but struggling at school

Will she make short videos about her work, rather than writing?

Instead spends her time drawing intricate comic strips or battles from History books As did my dad, eighty-five years ago. He's autistic, not diagnosed.

she rocks back and forth on her Chair, over and over again during Lessons.
Me, sixty years ago. I'm autistic (diagnosed) with adhd (self-diagnosis)

is fiercely competitive, always has to be first regardless. Dd, adhd (diagnosed) and Dgd (adhd, awaiting diagnosis), both competitive.

She will not put Pen to paper as such.. ever. Have you looked into PDA?

Dgd was very active in the womb. She has hyperfocus, astoundingly so, and has from infancy. Dd was the butterfly type, she took in everything quickly and was ready to move on to the next interest within minutes. Both were very early to speak, and hyperlexic.
