Chugger on my doorstep

squashyhat · 27/11/2023 17:02

I live rurally in the middle of a golf course and I've just had knock at my door. Thinking it was probably a delivery for a neighbour I opened it to a Great Ormond Street chugger on my doorstep. Is this a thing now or have I just been lucky to escape them so far? When I asked what he wanted he said "a cup of tea would be nice". I shut the door in his face Angry.

What a bloody cheek! 😧

Are you a prairie dog? Called Steve? 😱

mambojambodothetango · 27/11/2023 17:35

Eh? I've been getting charity workers knocking on my doors in various locations, albeit infrequently, for about 20 years. Is this really a first for you? He was just doing his job, you can say no thanks, no need to be rude.

muddyford · 27/11/2023 17:50

I used to live halfway up a mountain in mid-Wales, two miles from a road along an unbelievably rocky track. Jehovah's Witnesses still managed to visit even though the postman left our letters at the farmhouse the other side of the valley.

Bananalanacake · 27/11/2023 18:03

Do you have reinforced windows so they don't get smashed by balls?
Do you collect lost balls when you go for a walk and sell them back to the players? You should do an AMA about living on a golf course, sounds interesting,

cerisepanther73 · 27/11/2023 18:24

Talk about being determined, that's on the next level 💯 L.o.l 😂

with the Jehovah witness fraternity.!

@Bananalanacake
Eh L.o.l 😃

Oh my god, one was on my doorstep asking for a brew the other week as well. I don't know who the fuck he thinks lets random blokes into their house when they're a young woman in on her own.

Tara336 · 13/12/2023 17:19

I've so far this week had GOSH chugger who didn't want to take no for an answer and VSO who have visited twice in one day as was out first time (ring doorbell) actually getting really fed up with them now!

madeinmanc · 13/12/2023 17:22

When I said in a polite way I couldn't donate, the Great Ormond Street one snapped at me: "So you don't care about sick children, then?".

LlynTegid · 13/12/2023 17:22

A political party would make themselves a bit less unpopular if they made it illegal to ask for bank details or any recurring financial commitment in the open air or by calling at your house. Bank details you could argue a GDPR issue in any case.

Would not stop cash donations, bucket collections etc.

ScottBakula · 13/12/2023 17:29

I would of been tempted to grab a 9 iron ( or what ever they are called ) and yell FORE !

Elderflower14 · 13/12/2023 17:37

My Mum lives with me. One morning when I was at work she opened the door to a GOSH chugger. She said he was dancing about waving his arms in the air. She asked if he was feeling alright and told him to come back when I was at home. He came back in the afternoon and I got exactly the same performance when I opened the door. He got very short shrift from me and I complained to GOSH via Twitter...

In which case you should complain to the charity about this.

Face to face fundraising is an incredibly important source of income for many charities.

They abide by a code of conduct and train their fundraisers. If a fundraiser is behaving inappropriately tell the charity so that they can deal with it.

Respect goes both ways and OP slamming the door in someone's face is rude.

TwoMoreBoxesJayne · 13/12/2023 17:45

Just get a little 'no callers' type notice for your front door. I've one and it stops 99.9% of people -

Problem solved.

I'd never give to anyone who was or who claiming to be from a charity who called at my house.

Charities should not be using this form of raising money anymore.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 13/12/2023 18:00

My (bloody shitstirring) son once answered the door and gave his name to the jws knocking. They were blooming old then but came along every month. He moved out, he was on nights, it was a downright no. Then Covid. Two years after, they were back! Must be cracking on for 90 at least.

pillof · 13/12/2023 18:09

That's two who asked for a brew. Wonder if they've been given the cup of tea line to 'build rapport' (ugh) or something.

Oh yes, random unsolicited stranger, please come into my house.

I am always polite to them but inwardly I'm thinking 'fuck off, you're the rude one for knocking on my door and disturbing me when you're not a friend/relative/delivery driver'.

Jackiebrambles · 13/12/2023 18:13

I’ve had so many, I hate that they come to my door. I should get a little sign maybe.

StopStartStop · 13/12/2023 18:18

One walked right in to my daughter's house. We found him standing by the stairs. I had to do my best teacher's voice 'I need you to move back! Move back!' to get him out. The police spoke to him and said he thought it was the porch. It clearly and obviously was not.

^this. 'Chuggers' are usually employed as youngish people desperate for a job and don't realise they need to 'fundraise' their own salary before anything else. They have zero job or salary security and its a pretty tough job. If someone is rude or inappropriate then you take their name and report to the charity. They're doing it out of desperation to get a wage and often that's not explained well when they first hear about the job.

We get lots in our area and now we have a no cold callers sign on the door and they haven't come near us since.

I was stopped in my street once by a childrens charity one, I was talking to someone at the time and he just walked up and interrupted. I said 'no' and he said something similar. So I said 'no I don't' and turned my back on him. Meant to report him but had too many things to deal with at the time. Rude bastard.

Some councils ban it. Not sure about the legalities though.

SirenSays · 13/12/2023 18:49

I heard a knock and jumped out of the shower thinking it was a delivery. It was a chugger who got very annoyed I wouldn't take the chain off to speak to her in my towel in freezing wind and rain.

Whatineed · 13/12/2023 18:53

There are fake ones with very believable IDs and paperwork who go house to house to raise money for drugs and scope out potential homes for burglary.
