Is a piccolo the same fingering as a flute?

Please advise as I’m thinking of a piccolo for ds for Xmas and he currently plays a flute…

I’m fairly sure the basic fingering is the same, it’s just pitched an octave higher than the flute and has a smaller range.
its very hard to play and if he has big hands he might struggle with the keys.

Yes, same fingering.

Same basic fingerings - some alternative variations.

A military flute (Bb flute /fife) is similar-ish, but with enough differences to make it really hard for me to just pick up DS's and play.

Yes same fingering. DCs teacher advises some kids find it easy, others very hard and it can interfere with their flute playing. Do you have a music service or similar locally that can lend one first? Or can his teacher lend him one? Good idea to buy ear plugs (for DC not you).

Thank you @NotFastButFurious his hands are quite small and so I thought it would be easier now than when older but give him a bit of a challenge.
Thanks too @hotchocdrinker :)
@FallingAutumnLeaf I know flutes can come in varying types to confuse me, like Fifes etc… so that’s why I was checking. It must be strange to have something so similar but completely different!
@Waterlooville no I don’t think we have a service likely to offer a borrow, but I could try to get contact details for his teacher and ask her… I wouldn’t like it to interfere with his playing but he’s quite good and I was hoping it would give him a challenge and perhaps help his playing. But worth checking… thank you !!

Where did you get it from? Any recommendations? @Waterlooville

Depending on age an alto flute ( bigger) is different but can sound great

Or a wooden Irish flute for a very different sound but beautiful , basically same fingering

Or Irish whistles - in key of D would be most common and consistent with a silver flute fingering - both allow you to have some different techniques like slides that are hard on a sliver flute

If he plays in orchestras then a piccolo could be very useful. I used to love it! My lovely dad bought me a second hand one for Christmas when I was about 12 and it served me well for a long time!

Does he want a piccolo?

Waterlooville · 29/11/2023 08:49

We were lent ours by the county music service.

Does he want a piccolo?

He enjoys playing the flute but I’ve never asked him about a piccolo. He has the new football boots he has asked for for his main Xmas gift but this would be a surprise present.
