Multiple ear piercing now acceptable by all walks of life

When I was younger, if you had several earrings in both ear lobes it was considered a bit "common" or you were a punk or similar, and people higher up the social scale never seemed to have more than one small earring in each lobe.

Now it is very acceptable and extremely fashionable for people from all walks of life to have multiple ear piercings.

I was just wondering when and why this shift of opinion began.

I got my first lobe piercings when I was about 12 in 1992 ish. I was desperate to get them done but my mum made me wait. They were followed fairly closely by another 3 in each ear and I don't remember her batting an eyelid about any of them which is weird as she's very straight laced. I remember lots of girls having multiple ear piercings in my strict convent school where even the tiniest bit of makeup was strictly banned, and don't remember anyone ever being told to remove them.

I only got my helix and forward helix this year at the age of 42 and wish I'd done it years ago, I love them.

I had about 14 piercings by the time I was 18 and over half were in my ears. I don’t remember them ever being commented on at any point. I work in the public sector now and have loads of colleagues with multiple piercings, visible tattoos, bright hair etc and nobody bats an eye.

I was a teen in the mid 80s, and multiple piercings were already so common that they were not seen as a topic for discussion, even between my (uptight) parents.

In all of my professional life I have worked with people who have had ear and nose rings without it reflecting negatively on their career prospects. (I don't work in Law, though, where the rules seem to be far more formal). I have yet to meet anyone in my field with a pierced tongue, but I'm aware that one of our very senior managers has a Prince Albert piercing.

I've had 13/14 in my ears total for over 20 years ( I'm 43) I've not really had much said beyond " got anywhere else done"

I had my second piercing in 1978 and had my hair dyed pink. Put it up in a big spiky pineapple on top of my head. My dad was not amused.

Yes I think they are acceptable in all professions except possibly jiu-jitsu 😉

I don't understand piercings. I mean - I understand that people like them but I've never felt it myself. There's obviously something people enjoy about them but it escapes me entirely. I had my ears pierced as a teenager because everyone else did, and then took them out with relief after about three days. I don't like things on me - jewelry the same. Just put them in a ? box in my head with all the other things people like to which I am indifferent: fly fishing, cabaret, milkshakes, etc.
