How much do you spend on your Christmas food/drink shop?

I've just loaded up my virtual Tesco trolley with all of the booze, cheese, chocs, meats and just regular stuff, to get through the festive period, and it's come up to £350 🤯

I'll probably take out about £100 worth of stuff because that total is, to my mind, excessive?

What are others spending? I realise some will say they'll spend zero and others will say they're spending thousands but what about people in the middle ground? Those of us who have a family to feed and family coming round for a few parties over the week?

A big part of my shopping total, if anybody is curious is a Turkey, a beef joint and a duck for Xmas day and boxing day (to feed people with differing tastes) plus a lot of alcohol.

4 adults and we spend around £300, although a fair bit of that is alcohol.

I've saved up my Morrisons More points all year and I should have around £120 worth 🤞

Returnsreturnsandmorereturns · 26/11/2023 15:47

We tend to buy a few extra thing a week so I have no idea what the total will be.

Ours will be between 400-500. I absolutely hate spending that much, we can afford it but like you, I feel it seems so excessive. We do have people here for 6 days over Xmas, and will be hosting meals for at least 5 people each day. (Xmas day is 8), we will also be going out for 2 meals to pubs, and don’t even want to add that all up!

Isseywith3witchycats · 26/11/2023 15:52

2 of us live here I spend around £200 on food to do from christmas day till new years day which is about what i spend on a normal shop but for 4 weeks, i do host on christmas day so full works three courses for dinner and my OH pays for the drinks so he spends around £100 so £350 if your doing more than one hosting session is not actually that excessive with food prices having gone up over this year

User1775 · 26/11/2023 15:52

£500 for 4 people for 3 days. It's obscene but adult DC are obsessed and look forward to it so so much. I save up all year. DH cooks it all except my famous Boxing Day pie. The extras are the biggest cost: champagne, chocolate nuts, liqueurs etc

It's just madness tbh, but we really love it and don't go mad with presents so it balanced other families who have a lot more gifts and less gluttony

EightMonthsScared · 26/11/2023 16:00

This is reassuring. It's making the total feel less distasteful to me. I possibly won't deduct stuff after all 😊

One adult, one hollow legged teen boy and assorted visitors.

I usually spend £60 a week. Christmas week I'll spend about £120.
The extra will go on smoked salmon, better cuts of meat, wine, decent cheeses, chocolates.

I love cooking Christmas food so that keeps my costs down. 🙂

pointythings · 26/11/2023 16:20

About the same as you, but that will cover 7 days. We don't do big joints of meat because we have a vegetarian and several ND people who don't like the textures, so we're keeping things much lower key. There'll be 8 of us for about 5 days but several don't drink and the rest of us are very moderate. No meals out planned, we don't have enough cars and no public transport here!

Everyone mucks in and helps with the cooking, we play a lot of board games and keep it all very chill.

Wotsitfappe · 26/11/2023 16:24

We spend 200 to 300 without really including much alcohol as we buy from a wine supplier and don't normally host Christmas say but do buy stuff for it. Probably the higher sum is when we have done dinner at home.

Also I do buy some things like chocolate before. Thees 2 adults BTW!

hollowwallow · 26/11/2023 16:29

About £600 for six adults for five days. It is a stupid amount but we'll enjoy it. January will be quiet month.

GreenDay9irl · 26/11/2023 16:59

We are eating out this year so about £20 on alcohol that will last us through new year (neither of us drink much but I like a few bottles of wkd at Xmas and new year and dh some cider)
food wise, with what I would buy for a usual weeks shopping maybe about £50 extra in treats etc. so in all prob about £70 more than usual. I have £100 in club card points to cover it.

mindutopia · 26/11/2023 17:36

I would say it’s about £100-150 a day usually, more obviously for Christmas itself. This is for 4/5 adults and 2 children including all food, snacks and drinks. Usually we have 2-3 houseguests and they stay up to a week. It’s bloody expensive!

This year, I’m not drinking so I might cut that budget and buy no alcohol. If they want to drink they can bring their own instead of treating it like an AI resort.

Loubelle70 · 26/11/2023 17:41

Im cutting down this year. I went ott with chocolates every year...hundreds worth! Ive just bought 3 tubs and i do chocolate bag for kids when they come. Im also only doing initial shop for xmas eve buffet ..xmas day dinner..boxing day ...new year eve buffet...new years dinner. Beer wine etc. probably still 300 though!

glassyhag · 26/11/2023 17:46

7 adults and 2 toddlers. I do Xmas diner and for us this year it's about £350 too. That covers lots of nice cheese and crackers, delicious treats and a joint for new years day. In the past when we were doing a Boxing Day party we spent £400-600 so I'm glad that's not gaining this year. I'm spending the money I've saved on my grand babies.

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 26/11/2023 17:47

Large family of eight plus guests on Christmas Eve and day. I haven't added it up but it's a lot. I know meat alone is £256 this year (two whole filets of beef, turkey and a large ham)
However, I do have a very savvy dh who saves coupons and special offers all year. He's got £36 for Sainsbury, £290 Asda and a fair amount for Tesco but I'm not sure exactly how much.
So apart from meat most food is paid for. It's still a ridiculous amount though and does make me feel guilty.

ifonly4 · 26/11/2023 17:51

I do my shopping instore and buy the odd thing like pickles, gravy if I've got enough in the weekly budget in the six weeks before xmas. I've squirreled away £100 from our weekly budget over the year, which will more than cover xmas week.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/11/2023 18:01

About £400 including around£100 of alcohol

There are only 4 of us from Xmas Eve till morning of 28th and we are going away then for new year, possibly get an extra 2 guests Boxing Day evening.

£90 at butchers
£120 in M&S
£90 in Sainsbury's/waitrose

Remainder at majestic

mrsbyers · 26/11/2023 18:03

Our shop will be about £200 normally but this year we are going out for a curry and then on a few days away on 27th so will mainly be buying some party food and a few treats

Oblomov23 · 26/11/2023 18:06

More than that, for 3 adults and 2 ravenous teens. I redeem my Sainsbury's vouchers on my Christmas shop.

Pushkinini · 26/11/2023 18:21

We are 5 adults on Christmas Day, then 4 until 29th when we have two more joining us until 2nd. I've already bought the booze, £200 worth but that will last us well into the new year.

I've been buying bits like chocolate, crisps etc since last month and I reckon my actual Christmas Day shop will be £150 which will include stuff to last into the days after. I enjoy cooking so am preparing meals now to go in the freezer for when our NY guests join us.

I reckon our entire Xmas food and drink shop should come in around £450 which seems ridiculous for a week or so. We can afford it and I enjoy hosting. I do save up my Tesco vouchers all year which does help a little bit too.
