TV license

One thing that has always confused me is that the BBC iplayer just asks if you have a TV license. Its like porn asking if you are 18, just a wink wink cover your arse exercise.

If they are really bothered why don't they ask for a TV license number? I can't imagine why that would be difficult to implement.

It’s a declaration I guess if they decide to enforce action

You aren't supposed to watch iplayer without a licence.

mondaytosunday · 26/11/2023 01:50

@PhantomOps you do need a license to watch iPlayer. It doesn't have to be live.

Coolstorysis · 26/11/2023 02:44

Well exactly you are not supposed to but they make it trivial. Odd, seems like they want the viewership and publicity. Netflix don't let you watch stuff after pinky promising you have paid.

Because they can trace you through your original login.

My log in was created years ago at another address. I haven't used that email for years, probably been used by an ex 🤷

Fuck em.

poptypingchef · 26/11/2023 04:55

My friend got a letter through the door after clicking yes. Ended up buying a license for that year to avoid the costlier fine

CornucopiaTVLR · 22/01/2024 16:51

They are a bit confused between wanting the BBC to be available to everyone and getting people to pay.

The emails and letters come from matching email addresses (the one from the original Licence account or "No Licence Needed" and the one for the iPlayer ID). But it's not proper evidence of evasion because you could be anywhere when you a using iPlayer. They certainly can't prosecute based on that alone.
