I have no skills

Background: In my 40s and recently diagnosed with ADHD.
2 kids 1 DD in high school and 1 DS in an apprenticeship.
I’m a nurse working in the same department for 25 years.

I have recently decided that due to health issues eg back problems, my career will become unsustainable so I need a side hustle.
But. I’ve realised I have no skills. I’m good at nothing. I’m just average. My circle of friends is very small and my family dynamic is supportive but very much along the lines of you have a job for life why do you need a side hustle?!
Has anyone experienced this before? What did you do? How did you find your skill/niche.

Feeling a bit low this evening as it’s depressing to realise I am below average in everything.

You sound perfectly normal OP!! Normal and average perhaps. Just like most of us. I'm not particularly anything either. However my super power I've come to realise is my social skills, I can chat to anyone and never saw it as a skill but then I never realised when I was younger that many people struggle with this. I suspect being a nurse that you have pretty good people skills so could do well in a customer facing role, or a different caring role. You might need to retrain a bit though. I've never had a side hustle and would have no particular talents nor skills for one.

You cannot possibly be a nurse for 25 years and not have skills.
Lots of skills.
Lots of transferable skills.

Communication.
Keyboard skills.
Empathy.
Recording information.
Responsibility.
Handling confidential information.
Team Involvment.
Accuracy.
Timekeeping.
Health and Safety.
Handling/administering (controlled) drugs.
Updating professional skills....

All the above for starters!!

All of the above while running a home AND bringing up two kids...
So you can add time management, budgeting, childcare etc..

You have skills aplenty... sometimes we just live out lifes and dont realise just how MUCH we do, how varied, how intense it all is.

If you get a piece of paper and a pen and write out your ordinary day... detail EVERYTHING you do, all the skills you use... you will surprise yourself.. all the things you do well, easily.. without giving it any thought.

Every single thing I have mentioned above can be put on a CV... amd I bet you can add loads more.
Believe in youself.
Good Luck.

Thank you both for replying.

you have both boosted my confidence.
I am an excellent nurse, your right.

I just cannot see myself doing anything else. So many other nurses seem to do aesthetics etc as a side to make extra money or look at leaving nursing and I can’t think of anything I could do.

maybe it’s a case of I’ll have to leave nursing and find a new career path although that scares me as it’s all I’ve ever known.

What about being a self-employed carer?

TravellingSpoon · 26/11/2023 08:01

I am only suggesting that as it may be a less physical role, and perfect for your skills.

Or could you look at non-clinical work?

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/11/2023 09:01

Are you good with people? Some medical and life insurance companies employ nurses to deal with claims.

Alligator456 · 26/11/2023 09:03

Surely the answer is a less physical role within nursing such as being a nurse practitioner working at the gp?
