Help me wear earrings again!

I haven’t regularly worn earrings since my kids were born, so about 6 years, and didn’t wear them at all from lockdown until last year.

Now, if I try to wear them (all the ones I have are sterling silver), I find my ears get really itchy, when I take them out the holes are gunky. When putting them in I don’t have to punch them through or anything, but there is resistance.

Any ideas what’s going on? Do I need to find something hypoallergenic and comfy and just wear them 24/7 for a few weeks to force my ears to get used to them?

Solace jewellery do titanium ones which shouldn't itch

Handovertothetedcross · 25/11/2023 20:33

Mine do this too

Doggymummar · 25/11/2023 20:35

I got platinum or maybe titanium from marks and Spencer and they are fine, otherwise yes cheap ones make my ears gunky too

I think silver is one of the worst things for allergies. Try stainless steel or titanium.

InterSteller · 25/11/2023 20:39

I had exactly the same problem, the only earrings that my ears can tolerate are Solace hypoallergenic ones as recommended by PP.

They have 40% off atm in their Black Friday sale.

This exact thing happened to me. You have to wear stainless steel or titanium or real gold.

I highly recommend that you put studs back in for a few months to re-heal your holes. Leave them in 24/7. I had to and it worked.

Another vote for titanium, have a look on Etsy.

I find that with gold. Fine with silver.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 25/11/2023 20:41

Ah, interesting comments about silver - I could never tolerate cheap but silver was ok. Will try solace!

Try drop earrings. I can wear silver earings on drop hoops and cannot tolerate any kind of stud earring.

BabyRace · 25/11/2023 20:52

Worth rubbing some vaseline or moisturiser into your lobes before putting earrings in too.

LuckyFlickerman · 25/11/2023 20:53

Clip ons!

Put in some gold ones, leave them in for 6 weeks and clean with saline every day (basically treat them as a new piercing).

MovedonfromMartin · 25/11/2023 21:13

My ear piercings are terribly sensitive souls. I have to always keep earings in them. Silver works for me usually, but if they are having a particularly bad time (maybe I've not worn earrings for a while because I've forgotten), then I use transparent plastic studs from etsy. They are v v cheap but do the job brilliantly. Titanium didn't work for me for some reason.

DappledThings · 25/11/2023 21:16

I try every few months. Then remember it isn't worth the hassle and discomfort and forget about them again. Put some in for about 20 minutes the other day then took them out on the bus on the way to dinner. Will probably have the same experience in about 6 months.

Absolutely this! I used to be able to wear any old market stall earrings, then they suddenly started going gunky, oozy and feeling red raw inside the holes. These days only real gold works.

I’ve done this several times! Would really like to be able to wear them again though so going to give it a go…

Another vote for solace jewellery, the only earrings I can wear and a good variety with reasonable prices

J316 · 25/11/2023 22:21

Some silver has nickel in it and I don’t wear Gold so it titanium for me. Actually got some really nice ones on Temu, can even sleep in them 😀

Sunnydaysarethebestdays · 25/11/2023 22:42

Another vote for solace! Haven’t been able to wear earrings for years but no problem with aby from solace.

LookMaggie · 26/11/2023 00:26

I have the same issue even with bloody expensive platinum
I think my body just doesn't like foreign objects!

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 26/11/2023 01:02

Same issue here, even with titanium. I have practically given up.

Nsky62 · 26/11/2023 01:23

My ear lobes gone baggy at 61, always keep earrings in, and change when I feel like it, nearly all gold

quiteathome · 26/11/2023 09:38

I have just discovered that my ears didn't close up. Going to attempt earrings again. I haven't worn earrings for twenty years.

I ordered some from Solace last night.

thenightsky · 26/11/2023 10:50

I've had a look at the solace website and I can't see why they are hypoallergenic. The seem to be just stainless steel. I've had stainless steel before and they really hurt after about 10 mins.
