Is there a book you used to love but not any more?

Brideshead Revisited used to be my favorite book. I reread it regularly in my 20s and 30s. Now 20 years later I am reading it again, and it seems trite, shallow and pretentious. I'm so disappointed!

Yes! I reread Hotel New Hampshire a few years ago which I remembered so fondly. Awful. Really awful, particularly on rape and prostitution.

You are referring to John Irving I think? The poster was referring to Irvine Welsh.

I used to be a big John Irving fan and loved Hotel New Hampshire although it's been many years now.

I think there's a difference between no longer liking a book, and seeing it differently or not liking particular characters any more. Particularly if we're seeing characters through modern sensibilities. I still love Pride and Prejudice, even though my feelings about different characters has shifted. It's interesting when the character the writer obviously thought of as the hero now looks like an arsehole!
