Threadworm aftermath

The other day I discovered I had threadworms. I treated the whole family and it seems to have come from DD5 as it was quite obvious in her stools a few days after Ovex.

I have OCD and anxiety so it's not been the best week for me.

I'm freaking out that we are going to be stuck with the things forever. 2 things that worry me:

  • I don't think I "passed" many worms compared to DD, I could barely see anything in my stool so I'm worried ovex isn't working for me
  • DD has been up for the last hour tossing and turning. She was waking up constantly the week before the discovery. She went back to sleeping through within 24 hours of Ovex, so I worry that her being awake now is bad news... (6 days since Ovex)

I've not had a proper night's sleep in 2 weeks between DC, worms and anxiety keeping me up so I'm on my knees.

Not to mention getting DC to change as soon as they wake up and to shower instead of bath has caused so much aggro and extra tantrums from the 2 year old.

I feel like im fighting a losing battle and this is going to be our crappy, unenjoyable life forever. No matter what I try she will just pick them up from school again anyway.

Any reassurance or tips welcome

Hey .... you are overreacting! My DC used to get them. I gave us all the meds and that was that. No cleaning, worrying, panicking. Swallowed the jollop .... job done!

Thank you for all the reassurance, it really helped me chill out and we had a lovely weekend. I am back today with some 1am anxiety so I'm re-reading the messages! DD has just been up again and now I'm here awake wondering if I can feel wriggling...

One thing I don't understand is that there are bound to be some eggs that hatch between days 0 and 14 and presumably they can then lay their own eggs, so unless you shower every morning to get rid of all new eggs then there will still be some at egg stage on Day 14 that the second dose of Ovex will not kill, and hence the cycle carries on forever?

We've been changing as soon as we wake up, but the DC have not been showering first thing as it would be so much drama. It doesn't seem like it is an issue based on all your messages though? Really hope not!!!

My kids have had these several times over — grim but harmless. Like others, we take the ovex, change the bedsheets and hoover AND I give whoever definitely had the worms (as opposed to the whole household) the extra dose of ovex after 14 days just to see off any lingering ‘hatchlings’ that might have been lurking. It’s easy to stress as they are horrid, but very easily sorted. The worms are easier to sort than thumb sucking & nail biting…. X

My son had worms last month. Pharmacist gave us medication, never even mentioned to clean sheets etc. one dose for every family member was enough to kill them.

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 28/11/2023 06:10

Forgot to reply that the in-laws didn’t get them, and I discovered the worms just a few days before Christmas.

Catsanddogs1982 · 02/01/2024 18:23

Hello sorry to jump I hear and ask @Squirrelsonthescaffolding but you said you didn’t take the medication. Did you have them? My DS has them at the moment. All family has had over except me, I’m worried I won’t get rid of them.

wagnbobble · 02/01/2024 18:27

Agree with all above ( and I am super anxious ) First time did all the washing but subsequently just did the ovex. We probably had about 5 bouts and I got less stressful each time . They’re adults now but I found some very out of date ovex at the bottom of the medicine cover yesterday and was reminiscing about those years !

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 02/01/2024 18:50

It was a while ago. I don’t think I had them. Did on other occasions, you know because you get itchy after lying still for a bit. If I remember rightly you can break the cycle, so hygiene, hoovering around bed, pants and pjs in bed, Vaseline around anus maybe so they can’t do their thing, short nails . I found reading up on the life cycle helpful if gross.

Catsanddogs1982 · 02/01/2024 21:03

Thank you @Squirrelsonthescaffolding for replying. It is gross but trying to tell myself it’s so common and it will pass, but my anxiety is getting the better of me right now. Thanks for taking the time to reply, really helpful. 😊

Catsanddogs1982 · 02/01/2024 21:10

@wagnbobble that’s good to hear, that it gets less stressful. And I’m hoping one day (likely a long time from now) I will laugh about my manic reaction to worms. Another one came out in DS poo tonight, never seen in poo before so hoping that means the Ovex is working and weakening them so they are coming out.

Hi, I’m looking for some reassurance after reading this thread. I too am spiralling after threadworm. We found out 6 weeks ago my DD4 had them. Having two grown up kids I’d never experienced them before so knew nothing. She’s clearly had them for a while as had been complaining of being sore on either her bottom or vagina on & off for months & was waking in cycles at night. We put it down to not wiping properly at nursery. I feel so guilty that I didn’t realise. We’ve all dosed up on the Ovex,3 doses now. I can’t stop imagining eggs everywhere & feel the rest of my family have not followed the hygiene procedures so feel like we’re constantly going to have them. The two eldest & my OH take their phones into the bathroom, eat in their rooms, don’t shower first thing as get up later etc.
I'm suffering major anxiety& feel my house is dirty & covered in eggs. Also my DD4 has started waking in the night again over the last few days so I’m paranoid we have them again. Please experienced people help talk me down!

How did you get on @Paranoidocdmum ? Hope this all resolved for you. I am in a similar boat and strrrressed!

Mischance · 26/06/2024 19:23

It really is nothing to worry about at all. Just be thankful that there is a simple and harmless treatment for them now and get on with life.

My children got them all the time - we would sit at the tea table and pass round the "jollop! - sort of family bonding time!! Smile

I think you’re getting the day 14 ones before they lay eggs.
