Etiquette of changing roles in NHS

I have been in my current role for 3 months within the nhs. My dream job has just come up and I was wondering if there is a etiquette when it comes to applying internally. For instance do I have to let my current manager know before I apply? Thank you

Just apply.

If it's like the rest of the civil service then if it's a level transfer ( same pay band) then clear it with your manager first as you'll need their permission to move if you get the job. If it's a promotion and you get it they can't stop you moving ( although still polite to give them a heads up, and definitely tell them if you get an interview).

It’s not like the civil service. Apply and take it if it’s offered. Your current manager has no say in the matter.

I would only mention it to your boss once they are asking for references.

You just apply. If you are successful, then references are needed. If you then get your unconditional offer, you hand in your notice.

Catsonskis · 23/11/2023 19:08

Unless it’s a secondment you don’t need to tell anyone you’ve applied until they request your references if you are successful.

Thank you, no I'm currently a HCA, my dream is to work in theatre, and a theatre assistant job has come up! It's same band as a HCA, but wasn't sure if I needed let them know first

Absolutely not. Don't tell anyone until you get a formal job offer. Just apply for the job. You don't need to get permission from your manager to change jobs.

Thank you

These comments are correct - you shouldn't have to - but when I got a new band 5 role from band 5, my current manager blocked it for over six months until they had advertised and filled my current role.
