Anyone allergic to chemicals/perfumes in household products?

My cleaner uses a product that always makes me sneeze and my eyes smart, even if I'm in a different room. I think I've pinned it down to Viakal spray as it's the only one she uses that I don't use at other times. I'd be interested to know what ingredient is the trigger, so I can avoid it in other products, but I don't think it's possible to get skin prick tests for household chemicals, is it?

Does anyone else have a similar allergic reaction?

Suggestions for alternatives to Viakal spray would be useful too!

I can't use any clear anti bacterial spray my eyes stream and if I touch it my hand itches, I'm fine with anything else.

Cilit bang used to give me terrible sore throats.

Sadly yes and it got a lot worse post menopause. Air freshener is the absolute worst for me and loads of public loos have those auto spray ones.

Also allergic to the scent in Viakal and looking for an alternative! We use Ecover which is fine allergy wiser but not cutting it with our hard water

I use, Pink stuff bathroom. I like it no harsh smell I'm a soft water area though so im not sure how it would work for hard water but it isn't expensive so maybe worth a go?

Fragrances are complex compounds so you are unlikely to work out the exact event of a fragrance that you are allergic to. Plus companies don't have crib say what a fragrance is made up of so even if you knew you wouldn't be able to identity it. People with fragrance allergies are usually advised to avoid fragrance generally. Very difficult when it's on other people, or in buildings with public access.

I had patch testing (this is different to skin prick) which told me I had allergies to fragrance. This identifies skin allergies (which are delayed allergies) but I also have an immediate reaction to some fragrances as you describe - sneezing, watery swollen eyes, headaches, bunged up nose etc.

You can read about this here:

At home I use ecover zero and bio-d fragrance free products which are excellent. Bio-d do a spray on limescale remover that's fragrance free and very effective. You just leave a couple of minutes and rinse.

I find it really effective.

Not 'allergic' but I can't stand all this chemical junk so called cleaning products or air fresheners and smellies.

Scented candles, plug in air fresheners, spray cannisters, carpet freshing powders, laundry products, bed sprays, spritzer and smelly sticks and 'room scents' jeez it's a miracle any of us are still alive. Never mind poor cats and dogs who are even more affected!

I won't / can't have any of it in my home and when I stayed with my auntie I had to covertly remove it all from my room and tie it sealed in a plastic bag hidden in the hallway then sleep with my window open or I'd have not be able to breathe. We've all gone mad in a world of smelly chemicals IMO. As we see from these cleaning programmes, all is needed is a few basics - soda crystals, vinegar, citric acid, bleach.

I'm struggling with washing liquid / softener, esp softener, they all seem to trigger me.

Ecover zero laundry detergent and softener is very good and fragrance free. Surcare softener is also good.
