Been waiting months for this and get there, sit in the chair they pop the canular in I feel myself going woozy and then I'm fully conscious and I'm screaming at them drilling the tooth and telling them to stop. Gave me some more sedative and stated again and felt everything and fully conscious. They had to stop and tell me they can't go any further.

I've been sedated 7 times in the past and I've been fully unconscious and not felt a thing. Woke up in a bed in recovery and have had to be carried out to the car and lay down.
I'm fully fine a bit woozy now and in pain but what the hell went wrong I don't understand! This has never happened before?

I thought I had a bad sedation second time round - until I read your post! Apparently I could be heard shouting from the waiting room and had to be (gently) held down. Remember nothing until I woke up in bed at home!

@Incognitoergosumlol I s it possible that there's different sedatives? This has never happened before. I remember drifting off feeling then coming too when they was trying to break me tooth 🤢 I was told that I would be away with the fairy's and wouldn't care but I very much cared and was screaming for them to stop! I'm traumatised 🫣

I had Midazolam both times and have no idea why it was so different - both dentists were fantastic and didn't leave my mouth in a mess afterwards. I had no pain after with either but was a nightmare patient the second time. I also remember quite a lot during the procedure. I wish I didn't! Thank god I don't need anymore teeth out...

I’ve had sedation that does nothing and sedation that’s knocked me out. No idea why

funbags3 · 23/11/2023 19:12

I didn't realise you could get sedated for a removal. They've always given me an injection into the gum.

MonsterRehab23 · 23/11/2023 19:19

Not a medic but I used to work in a dental sedation clinic in the mid 2000’s as a dental nurse and assisted with hundreds of dental sedations.

I always remember the dentist telling patients that they wouldn’t be asleep or unconscious but the sedation would make them think they had been asleep.

Some people seem to just react differently to sedation as well. There were 2 different types of drugs used in the clinic depending on the patient’s medical history which can affect how well it works and the recovery. Other factors to consider are the dr giving the sedative or the type of dental treatment too could impact your experience.

There are different types of sedation so it's probably just that you had a conscious sedation rather than twilight sedation. Little comfort if you found it terrible but explainable nonetheless.

I always remember the dentist telling patients that they wouldn’t be asleep or unconscious but the sedation would make them think they had been asleep.

So, what does that mean please? That the patient is fully conscious and aware of the pain, but afterwards they don't remember it? They are left with the memory that they'd been asleep?

Throwingpots · 23/11/2023 19:40

Had a molar pulled out last week, had injections in the gum area. Didn’t feel a thing, sounds like a better bet than sedation.

cardicoat · 23/11/2023 19:42

I assumed they'd administer a local anaesthetic into the gum alongside the sedation. Dental pain can be very intense so I'm not surprised sedation only sometimes doesn't work. Nerve pain can cut through anything.

Always ask for local anaesthetic regardless of anything else you might have.

dixeypeach · 23/11/2023 20:05

@cardicoat they did I was numb but still felt the pain. I've had sedation in the past but have no memory of it just remember being brought too. Yesterday I became fully aware and felt pain as the were drilling my tooth and I remember everything! She tried to carry on but but I was screaming, this is not what I've had before and I'm left in pain because they've messed with the tooth 😪
