Melatonin thoughts

I'm out of the UK at the moment where they sell melatonin over the counter- is it worth stocking up on it as a sleep aid? Does it work, any idea experiences? I know it's supposed to help with jet lag. Thanks.

Its a naturally produced hormone that can aid a natural.sleep.pattern ,its not a sleeping tablet as such
Its usually prescribed to children/ adults who struggle to fall.asleep.but doesn't work for everyone ,I don't think there is any harm in trying it though.

on the fence. it helped my daughter fall to sleep but gave her crazy vivid dreams and was very groggy and moody the next day. it did help her get into a sleep pattern though

IME, it does help with sleep, especially the slow release type. I find it helps as I tend to wake at around 3am and it helps me drop off again (menopausal). Side effects are vivid dreams and it can make you feel a bit groggy in the morning. As a bonus I found it stopped hot flashes. I only have to use it very occasionally (3mg slow release).

You can buy it online from the UK.

I stock up when I’m in the US. Works brilliantly for me. Straight asleep and wake up really refreshed. As someone who has struggled with sleep my whole life they’ve been a game changer.

Thanks for the comments,

What strength did you get @MissDollyMix? There are so many different ones here - I'm in the US too.

It helped my son a lot but he is autistic and many autistic people don't produce enough melatonin. I don't think it is all that great for the general population.

We buy a job lot of the CVS 3mg pots. I think it’s 250 pills in a pot. They work well for me.

I’ve got 1mg, 3mg and 5mg tablets. I usually find 1mg is enough for me but occasionally take 3mg. Personally almost never needed 5mg.

Babymamaroon · 23/11/2023 14:28

Marvellous stuff! I have the 3mg and slept through absolute carnage on a red-eye flight this summer

Aparecium · 23/11/2023 14:38

I have found it hugely helpful. I take 6mg slow-release at bedtime. It helps me fall asleep and stay asleep, and has no after-effects the following day.

AbsolutelyFemale · 23/11/2023 14:40

I ve used it for years as has my elderly mum and it's helped us both get good sleep. I believe there are lots of other benefits to taking melatonin as it helps your body repair itself.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 23/11/2023 14:41

Yes it works. DS and I both use it, he has ADHD traits and I am just a terrible sleeper and always have been. I buy 10mg gummies online and he had 1/4 so about 2.5mg and I have a half.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 23/11/2023 14:41

I got some berry flavored "melty" ones, blue plastic jars, quite high strength (sorry I can't remember the name!) and they worked a treat for a while, but also gave me diarrhea.

Benefits of melatonin here:

Melatonin is high in antioxidants that can help prevent cell damage and keep your eyes healthy. Research suggests that melatonin could be beneficial in treating conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Melatonin Protects the Mitochondria in Cells and Inhibits Cell Death.

The mitochondria are the parts of the cell responsible for generating energy. When they produce energy, ROSs (reactive oxygen species) and RNSs (reactive nitrogen species) are its by-products. These ROSs and RNSs damage mitochondrial DNA and proteins, leading to cell death. Melatonin is naturally occurring in the parts of the body that need it the most, including the heart, brain, and nervous system. By acting as an antioxidant, it protects and cleans up the mitochondria of the cells and prevents disease in these parts of the body when present in healthy amounts.
