What the bloody hell is wrong with my tongue! Starting to worry.

I went to the GP last Friday who told me it looked like thrush and prescribed me some nystatin drops. The burning seems a little better but the end of the tongue seems really red and raw looking still. I suffer from health anxiety (severely) so naturally I am now terrified its oral/tongue cancer and that my GP is wrong as I am not seeing a big improvement. I have a scalloped tongue already but never had anything like this. I attached a pic, the pain and discoloration is localised to the end of my tongue and I have no other symptoms but I am SO worried. Any suggestions/reassurance would be really welcome.

I think generally that is right @willingtolearn however in this case the symptoms really aren't going away.

Get your low folate sorted immediately, it is a B vitamin and very important. I'm very surprised your GP didn't link your scalloped tongue with the red/soreness. Even i know that and I've had no medical training.

Nutritional Deficiencies. A scalloped tongue can occur when the body is not getting enough of certain vitamins, such as vitamin B, iron, niacin, and riboflavin.

Symptoms of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency

  • extreme tiredness.
  • a lack of energy.
  • pins and needles.
  • a sore and red tongue.
  • mouth ulcers.
  • muscle weakness.
  • problems with your vision.
  • psychological problems, which can range from mild depression or anxiety to confusion and dementia.

^^ it could be exacerbating your health anxiety too.

If you needed b12 injections , you need them for life. So unfortunately you need to go back to the gp, point out you are symptomatic of a b12 deficiency and get back on them.

You could have burning mouth syndrome, which can be linked to vitamin deficiency.

Start with a blood test, if that doesn't rule anything out ask for a referral to an Oral Medicine clinic, usually found in a dental hospital.
