Back pain

Morning all

I have very severe lower back pain (sacroliitus or something as diagnosed by osteo yesterday) after sleeping sitting up one nigh last week. I never usually have back pain so this is all new to me but I know it's very common

two questions if I may

  1. i am in worse pain today than yesterday having seen the osteo- is a flare up normal?

  2. it hurts to move but is it better to move rather than rest or vice versa?

thank you

It is better to try and keep mobile if you can. Hugs x

While it might feel like a setback, it could actually be a sign that things are starting to shift and hopefully improve in the long run. In general, gentle movement and stretching can help to keep your muscles from tightening up too much, but pushing through intense pain probably isn't the best idea. It might be worth checking in with your osteo again to see if they have any specific recommendations for you. Also, I stumbled upon this article about renowned Dallas spine surgeons that might have some useful info for you https://www.dallasnews.com/sponsored/2023/12/18/considering-spine-surgery-here-are-7-of-dallas-renowned-providers/. I haven't personally dealt with spine issues myself, but I've heard good things about seeking out specialists in situations like this.

I have suffered on and off with back pain for years. Best thing to do is get some 'specific for you' exercises from a physio. I take ibuprofen when my back is bad, not just as a pain killers but for it's anti-inflammatory properties. In my case, the physio told me not to sit for too long and to walk as much as I can, not necessarily a boots-on hike, but even just walking around the house or garden. I also have spine rotation and flexion exercises to do several times a day. But it's important to get something tailored to your specific case. Did your osteopath not give you any advice on this? Hope you soon feel better.
