Why has tumble dryer repairman said dryer can't be used for 24 hours?

It already broke at the worst possible time (illness creating extra washing), then couldn't be repaired on first visit as had to order parts and now engineer informed me on the way out that it can't now be used for 24 hours but not why 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyone have any idea why that would be? I have guests coming tomorrow and need to change beds, one of which I only have one set of bedding for currently (DD just upgraded from single to double and the others are king size), also have massive backlog of towels etc so it's dropped me in the shit a bit. Will obviously do as I'm told but will find that easier if I at least understand why!

Can you ring him and ask?

Janetsmug · 22/11/2023 08:33

No direct number, repair organised through main Indesit repair centre. Could ring them I suppose but not sure call centre staff would even know.

What was the issue with it? Has he used a sealant of some sort that needs 24 hours to fully 'go off'?

Grumpynan · 22/11/2023 08:41

information from my user manual which I actually looked at because the delivery man said the same to me last week 😂

After installation, you need to let the dryer rest still for 24 hours before using it. If the dryer has to be laid down on one of the sides during servicing then it needs again to resettle. I’m not sure why but I assume it’s like a freezer shouldn’t be turned on straight away. I suggest you run it empty for the first time as well because you can sometimes get a smell.

Original repairman said motor had gone but today's chap said 'loads' of parts had been ordered and that the internal workings had more or less all been replaced. No idea about sealant but guess it's possible.

When we moved house we immediately used ours and it broke. Repair man said they need time to settle when they’ve been shunted about. Was unaware.

Janetsmug · 22/11/2023 08:49

That's helpful Grumpynan, not sure I even still have my user manual, dryer must be 10+ years old.

Sounds like that's the reason then since two posters have said the same. Still annoyed but slightly less so now so thank you Grin

I thought you had to leave fridges for a while if they had been moved because of the coolant and needed to allow that to settle. What is in a tumble dryer that needs to settle?

Crossinsomekindaline · 22/11/2023 08:56

If it's heat pump, then it's similar to a fridge in that the oil in the pump can move into the circulation pipes if laid on its side.

The 24 hour thing is to give all the oil a chance to leave the pipes back where it belongs.

Unless its been upside down for hours, you'll be fine to use after 6 - 8 hours.

crumblingschools · 22/11/2023 09:03

@Crossinsomekindaline that makes sense, we’ve only ever had old style tumble dryers so couldn’t think what needed 24 hours to settle

Janetsmug · 22/11/2023 10:35

It's a condenser dryer, is that the same as a heat pump?

If you're stuffed for getting bedding towels done before guests, then see where your nearest laundrette is and drop them off for a service wash.

I had to use one for a while, as machine died unexpectedly and for various boring reasons it took a few weeks to get a new one. Fab service, and can be v quick turn-around, especially if you beg and bribe explain the urgency and ask if there's a premium service.

Janetsmug · 22/11/2023 11:22

Thanks, am exploring options for launderette but no car til DH gets home so even that's not simple!

I had to leave my newly installed fridge 24 hours.
